Money matters*Professional CareerDevelopment LoanA Career Development Loan (CDL) is a bankloan designed to help pay over 18’s forwork-related learn<strong>in</strong>g. Students can borrowbetween £300 and £10,000 to help with <strong>the</strong>costs of be<strong>in</strong>g a student. The Skills Fund<strong>in</strong>gAgency pays <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest on <strong>the</strong> loan whilestudents are learn<strong>in</strong>g and for up to onemonth after tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g has stopped. TheRt. pants.to.povertyFour entrepreneurial GCHND Graphic Designstudents entered anational competition todesign some pants <strong>in</strong>aid of charity as a resultof <strong>the</strong> College’s GazelleGroup status. The Gazelle Group is exclusivelyfocused on build<strong>in</strong>g a recognisable cluster ofEntrepreneurial Colleges with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next five years.The students were tasked with creat<strong>in</strong>g a bus<strong>in</strong>ess plan anddesign<strong>in</strong>g a pair of Olympic-<strong>the</strong>med pants that <strong>the</strong>y can <strong>the</strong>nsell to raise money for ‘Pants to Poverty’. The three Gloucesterbasedteenagers with <strong>the</strong> team name ‘Kecks and Bloomers’ wonan <strong>in</strong>ternal competition beat<strong>in</strong>g off five o<strong>the</strong>r college teams to gothrough to <strong>the</strong> next level of <strong>the</strong> competition with <strong>the</strong>ir ‘Keep Calmand Be British’ design. The designers <strong>the</strong>n had to sell 500 pairs of<strong>the</strong>ir bespoke pants by 1st June to be <strong>in</strong> with a chance of w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<strong>the</strong> overall competition and be<strong>in</strong>g given <strong>the</strong> opportunity to visit avillage <strong>in</strong> India where <strong>the</strong> Pants to Poverty project is crucial.Design student Alex Elmer-Menage said:“It is an <strong>in</strong>credible opportunity to see a country we wouldn’t normallyhave <strong>the</strong> chance to visit. Each piece <strong>in</strong> her collection is one of a k<strong>in</strong>d andhand created <strong>in</strong> England. Melissa is a former GloucestershireCollege student who decided at <strong>the</strong> age of 40 she wanted totake on a new venture. “I always knew <strong>the</strong>re was someth<strong>in</strong>gI was good at and at I have f<strong>in</strong>ally found my forte”. Melissareceived a dist<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>in</strong> all of her 17 units of <strong>the</strong> HND <strong>in</strong> Spatial Design which gaveher <strong>the</strong> encouragement she needed to set up her bus<strong>in</strong>ess.Melissa started her company without any sav<strong>in</strong>gs or a bank loan, putt<strong>in</strong>g all<strong>the</strong> money she <strong>in</strong>itially made from sales straight back <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess.
