Chapter 6Selection6.1 IntroductionAs should be evident from the great number of water lifters and primemovers reviewed in the preceding chapters, selection of the best lifters/mover <strong>com</strong>bination for a specific application must involve quite a narrowingdownprocedure. This procedure can be quite <strong>com</strong>plex for modern pumps andengines (or motors), however the selection process in general <strong>com</strong>prisesthree basic areas of consideration; (a) availability and adaptability, (b)water requirements,and (c) cost.6.2 Availability and AdaptabilityThe availability of goods and services will be the first factor tonarrow the field to types of water lifte.rs and drivers which can beutilized for a given application. Of course, with enough capital, anywater lifter can be provided or built anywhere in the world, however,normal economic feasibilities will render some pumps unavailable in manyareas, particularly in the agricultural regions of developing countries.This availability goes beyond just the initial acquisition of a waterlifter and driver. Also included are the availability of spare parts,fuel (or electricity) of the proper quality and in sufficient amounts, andlabor, trained to operate and/or maintain the devices.If a pump and driver are to be bought <strong>com</strong>mercially, the ability toorder them in a geographicarea and at a given time must be considered.If the water lifter Ts to be built (e.g., noria, water ladder) the necessaryconstruction materials must be available.
