As it appears in some narratives, this verse was revealed in responseto a question posed by Jewish priests. The reason which prompted them toask this question was the verse of the Qur'Zn where it has been said: Gje , 3 , , ,# ,'> ,'Y! ,&I 2 (and you are not given but a little from the knowledge -~l-'Isra', 17:85). When the Holy Prophet came to the blessed city ofMadinah, some Jewish priests visited him and it was about this verse thatthey confronted him by saying, "You say that you have been given a littlefrom the knowledge. Is this what you are saying about your people, orhave you included us too therein?" The Holy Prophet said, "I mean all,"that is, 'our people and the Jews and Christians as well.' Thereupon,increasing the tempo of their opposition, they said, "To us, Allah Ta'ZlZ,' *I*,,has given the Torah which stands out as: $2 J.&! dG (an explanation ofeverything)." He said, "That too is but a little as compared to DivineKnowledge. Then, even the total knowledge contained in the Torah is notknown to you either - what you go by is no more than a certain measureof what you need. Therefore, as compared to the Divine Knowledge, thecollective knowledge of all Scriptures and Prophets is also nothing but alittle." Surely, the promise of Allah is true.So, the worldly life must not deceive you, nor youshould ever be deceived about Allah by the Deceiver.
