Playing for the sake ofplaying should never be the objective. Even that too is restricted to themeasure of need. Any indulgence that stretches to unreasonableproportions or touches the limits of excess would not be in order. Thus, thereason behind the justification of all these games is no other but that theyhave to be within their limits. If so, they would just not be counted as'lahw.'Games Prohibited ExplicitlyAlong with the games mentioned above, there are others the HolyProphet has prohibited particularly - even though, some benefits maybe seen therein - such as, chess, backgammon and others played withcounters and pieces. [AbE DZwEd in al-MarasT1 from Shuraih as in al-Kanz] Theapparent reason for the prohibition of this type of pastimes is that theplayer of these games becomes so preoccupied with them that he wouldturn heedless towards other things he must do, even to SalZh, and otherreligious obligations.The Injunctions of Music and Musical InstrumentsSome SahZbah have explained the expression: &&I$ (lahwal-hadith: the distracting amusement of things) in the cited verse assinging and playing of musical instruments.
