Th e Ch a r l e s Jo h n s o n St u d e n t Fiction Aw a r d<strong>Crab</strong> <strong>Orchard</strong> <strong>Review</strong> is pleased to announce “Pineapple” bySarah Nance (University of Wisconsin; Madison, Wisconsin) asthe winner of the 2009 Charles Johnson Student Fiction Award.We would also like to congratulate the finalists for the award:“Start Anywhere” by Melissa A. Castillo-Garsow (Arizona StateUniversity; Tempe, Arizona), “Bitten” by Rachel Furey (SouthernIllinois University Carbondale; Carbondale, Illinois) and “TheMiddle Seat” by Deborah Gardner (University of Washington;Seattle, Washington).The Charles Johnson Student Fiction Award from SouthernIllinois University Carbondale is an annual award competitionintended to encourage increased artistic and intellectual growthamong college and university students at the undergraduate andgraduate levels, as well as reward excellence and diversity increative writing. Each year, $1000 and a signed copy of a CharlesJohnson book will be awarded to the winner. The winningentry will also be published in the Winter/Spring issue of <strong>Crab</strong><strong>Orchard</strong> <strong>Review</strong>. The award is co-sponsored by Charles Johnson,<strong>Crab</strong> <strong>Orchard</strong> <strong>Review</strong>, and the SIUC Department of English andCollege of Liberal Arts.The 2010 Charles Johnson Student Fiction Award competition isclosed. The results will be announced on September 1, 2010, andcomplete guidelines for the 2011 award will be available at:johnson.siuc.edu
