Signs of HearingLossRarely does hearing loss occur suddenly.Individuals become accustomed to the‘absence or reduced’ sound informationand often ‘adapt’ during the gradualdeterioration of their hearing. The endresult of listening with impaired earsbecomes the norm, when it is not! Often, those suffering from hearing loss attributetheir inability to hear or understand speechto ‘too much background noise’ or others‘mumbling’.It has been said that the best way tomake a hearing loss obvious is to donothing about it. The following behavioursare common among hearing losssufferers.■ Frequent requests for repetition.■ Complaints about others ‘mumbling’.■ Listening to TV or Radio at very highvolume.■ Difficulty with telephone.■ Frequent inappropriate conversationalresponses.■ Denial of hearing loss and unwillingnessto be medically tested.■ Domination of discussions. If you suspect you or a loved one mayhave impaired hearing, consult a qualifiedhearing care professional .How to Evaluate What Hearing Aidis Right for You?Recent technological advances have beenmade which have improved the experienceof living with hearing instruments for manyhard of hearing people. There is a widerange of technology available to help peoplecope with hearing loss, and products growin sophistication every year. The righthearing instrument style and size for youdepends on several factors, including:■ Degree of hearing loss■ Listening requirements■ Ear shape and size■ Ability to handle instrument and controls■ Lifestyle needscontinued on page 86 | E x p e r i e n c e

continued from page 6There are four main categories ofhearing instruments:Completely-in-the-canal (CIC)CIC are custom made so that allcomponents fit inside the shell, but theyare worn deeper in the ear canal thanin-the-ear hearing aids (ITE’s) which aredescribed in the following category andare almost invisible. Less amplificationis required from CIC than other typesof hearing instruments because outputis delivered close to the eardrum. ClCreduces the awareness wearers haveof their own voice and their ears do notfeel as “plugged up” as with other typesof instruments. The technical term forthis benefit is “reduced occlusion effect”.Wind-noise and telephones pose fewerproblems to wearers of CIC compared tothe other types of instruments as well.In-the-ear (ITE) In-the ear hearingaids (ITE) became available in the late1970’s and are now the most popular styleof hearing instrument in North America.Consumers are attracted to the discreetstyling of ITE which come in severalsizes including full shell (large) to halfshell (small). All the instruments electricalcomponents are housed within the custommadeshell which is worn inserted in theear. The microphone is located in a morenatural position on ITE than on BTE andsome people find that this provides bettersound quality.In-the-Canal (ITC) In-the-canal (ITC)hearing aids are smaller and are custommade to fit the shape of your ear canal. These aids can be worn during mostphysical activity. They also fit more deeplythan ITE hearing aids and therefore are8 | E x p e r i e n c e

popular because of their cosmetic appeal. All of the components within the singleplastic shell fit into the ear.Behind-The-Ear (BTE) Behind-theear (BTE) were the most common hearinginstruments in North America from the1950’s-1970’s, and they continue to outsellall other hearing instruments world-wide.BTE aids are reliable and offer fittingflexibility in addition to power. Theseinstruments sit behind the ear and amplifyincoming sound. The amplified soundtravels down a short tube connected toa custom-fitted earmold that delivers thesound into the ear canal, towards theeardrum.and they are small-sized. The sound tubebetween the instrument and the earpieceis very thin and transparent. Micro BTEsare discreet and almost invisible.Receiver-In-The-Ear (RITE) Thisis an elegant, invisible, anatomic anddiscreet Behind-The-Ear solution. Thespeaker unit is sitting right in your earcanal and provides very clear and naturalsound. Each hearing instrument style can bemade with different levels of technology.Ask your hearing care professional for thestyle and technology that would be bestfor youMicro Behind-The-Ear (MBTE)These tiny instruments sit behind your ear,~ Serving with Dignity, it Integrity & Economy ~www.simplecremationbychoice.comsimple@shawcable.com250.493.3846South Okanagan 250.498.4846527 Ellis StreetS o u t h O k a n a g a n S i m i l k a m e e n | 9

Financial planningacross the generationsThe gap between wants and needsIn many cases,Baby Boomersnot only have toplan for their ownfinancial futurebut also that oftheir parents. Not all Baby Boomers are going toinherit money from their parents, manywill have to assist their parents bothfinancially and personally. However, there is a distinct gap betweenthe level of assistance that agingparents of adult children want and whatthey really need.A recent survey conducted by TorontobasedBayshore Home Health showed;■ Almost 25% of adult children didn’tknow their parent’s annual income.73% of agingparents felt theydidn’t need helparound the home, only 43% of theiradult childrenagreed.■ 25% of adult children thought thattheir aging parents would be askingfor financial assistance but only 5% ofthe parents planned to ask.Clearly there is a disconnect betweenwhat level of financial assistance theaging parents think they need and whattheir adult children think they need. This can be attributed to a lack ofcommunication which exists due to thenature of the topic. Many parents ofBaby Boomers feel that discussing theirpersonal finances is taboo.continued on page 1810 | E x p e r i e n c e

Exercise Key ForHealthy AgingIt’s Never Too Late To Start!by Paul Girard, PTWhat Our Elderly WantIt’s interesting to ponder what our society’selderly want. Many authors and articleswill purport to know this. One tends toreach the same conclusion Dr. John Sloancame up with when treating what hetermed the ‘fragile elderly.’ In his fantasticbook, A Bitter Pill, Dr. Sloan reflected ona career of dealing with very elderly andsick clients. He came up with the amazinganswer to what these patients want: “Alot of different things.” He wasn’t trying tobe facetious; he was telling the truth. Dr.Sloan’s findings generalize to the entirepopulation of almost any segment ofsociety: What Canadian seniors want is alot of different things. The better question, perhaps, is how are our elderly citizensgoing to achieve all the different thingsthey value in life? How are our elderlygoing to get what they want?14 | E x p e r i e n c e

Demographics Meets RevenuesThe elderly in our society are at acrossroads in history. Their numbersare growing and the writing is on thewall when we look at what kind of futuregovernment resources will be availableto help. The demographic tidal wavehas arrived. Clearly, in order to achievetheir goals and get what they want, ourelderly citizens are going to have to relyless on government resources. Oneway or another, elderly citizens will befinancing more of their needs on theirown. Logically, it will be in an elderlyperson’s best interest to minimize theirexpenditures on items unrelated to theirpersonal goals. One such item is healthcare. Paramount to avoiding costs ofpoor health will be maintaining goodhealth. Whatever it is that seniors want, they are much more likely to achieve itby staying healthy and at home. The Secret To Our Elderly ImprovingTheir OddsSo, what is the latest on staying healthyand at home? Plain and simple:regular physical activity. This translatesto better overall health and improvedability to function independently andsafely at home as we age. And, thereis good news for those individualswho have not been physically activeor have lived a relatively sedentarylifestyle – it is never too late to start.Health related improvements havebeen shown in elderly individuals whodid not begin to exercise regularly untillate in life. In fact, the late starters didbetter than those individuals who wereactive only in younger years and thenstopped exercising completely. Thekey is that it has to be regular exercise, not that once a month walk around themall with your best friend in search ofS o u t h O k a n a g a n S i m i l k a m e e n | 15

that really great bargain! The benefitsof exercise for older adults are wellunderstood: lowered blood pressure, better controlled diabetes, improvedcholesterol profile, improved strengthand bone density, better balance anddecreased fall risk. Importantly, it hasbeen shown that regular exercise canalso improve cognitive functioning –with improvements seen in areas of thebrain that perform “executive functions”or tasks related to planning, decisionmaking and working memory. Thisis worth repeating, since epidemicdementia is foreseen with the growingelderly population: regular exercisebenefits brain function. Now comes the hard part – gettingstarted and sticking with it. Humannature being what it is, there will bemany excuses or perceived barriersregarding regular exercise. Truth betold – all barriers can be overcome oneway or another. First and foremost it isimportant to be honest. If you have leda sedentary lifestyle, or are returning toexercise after a long period of inactivity, start gradually and set realistic goals.Walking one block to the corner storeto buy the newspaper 3 times a weekmight be a good start for someone, whereas another individual may startat walking community trails 20 minutesa day 4 or 5 times a week. Since itis accessible to everyone, walking isa good start. Some suggestions forgetting walking regularly include scopingout the local mall before the shops open, attending a local community centre, orjoining the many walking groups thatspring up in communities all over theprovince. It is a great way to exerciseand socialize, while at the same timeimproving endurance, strength and bonedensity. The sky is the limit with regard to thekinds of exercise available to individuals.Finding something that is enjoyable willensure that it is performed regularly.Look in the local newspaper for listingsof local exercise classes or activities thatare appealing. Local seniors’ centreshold exercise classes from yoga to linedancing to lawn bowling and everythingin between. Seniors’ apartments andliving facilities often have activity andgroup exercise classes. There are allkinds of DVDs available at the library forchair exercise or other exercise classesthat can be followed along at home.Begin with a friend, family member orspouse. It’s easier to stick to a programwhen you have support. The bottomline is that regular exercise is essentialfor healthy aging, plain and simple. It’severyone’s responsibility to reducethe strain on our healthcare system.Selfishly, when you reduce your reliancePersonalized Haircarefor Men & WomenLocated in thePenticton Lakeside Resort & Casino250-492-8285www.shingatasalon.comMon. - Fri. 9 am - 7 pm…Sat. 9 am - 5 pm…Walk-ins Welcome16 | E x p e r i e n c e

The Aging DriverDriving in the Senior Yearsby Sean Wells, DriveWise CanadaA common myth among many iswhen you become a senior, you are abad driver. In fact, many older, moreexperienced drivers remain safe onour roads. The issue is that as weage, our bodies both physically andmentally begin to change as we growolder. This may affect the way wedrive. Many decisions must be madefor every minute of driving. Eachdecision requires an almostimmediate response. Today’s roadsare much busier than they were 60years ago. We are not just watchingout for other cars anymore, but moreroad users such as pedestrians, cyclists, motorbikes and motorizedscooters to name just a few.Older drivers take longer to respondto important decisions and mighthave to deal with weaker muscles, limited range of motion and areduction in flexibility. This caninterfere with their ability to be awareof their driving environment which is360 degrees around a vehicle.Tips for the aging driver:• See your doctor and visionspecialist at least once per year• Don’t drive if feeling ill or tired• If necessary, bring along apassenger to help you navigate• Watch the traffic ahead of you anduse at least the two second rulewhen following other vehicles. This gives you more space torespond to potential hazards.• Talk to your family about yourdriving. If necessary, seek aspecialist to help your familydetermine if you are safe on theroads.• Take a driving evaluation BEFOREyou retest for your licence. Many senior drivers will be sent aletter ordering them to re-test theirdriving skills with ICBC. This can bea stressful time. Make sure you areprepared ahead of time. The road testis very difficult – We are here to helpyou!Drivewise BC specializes in senior drivingtraining programs. www.drivewisebc.com46 | E x p e r i e n c e
