The labelthat is currently popular for unhealthyfamilies is “dysfunctional.”Unfortunately, sociologists of religion(as well as many exmembers) knowthat some churches are also dysfunctional, even to the point of being spirituallyabusive…Not if my own research of the pastfew years has any validity at all.Sadly, spiritual and pastoral abuse ismore prevalent than most people believe.Like child abuse, it often goesundetected, or else it is strongly denied.Spiritual abuse is inflicted bypersons who are accorded respectand honor in society by virtue of theirpositions of religious authority andleadership. When such leaders violatethe sacred trust they have beengiven, when they abuse their authority, and when they misuse their ecclesiasticaloffice to control their congregations, the results can be catastrophic. For sometime now we have been witnessesto the many tragedies, misfortunesand calamities taking placearound us. We have heard or seenmany people perishing in an airplanecrash, car accidents, a flood, an earthquake,a sea tragedy, a fire, a storm, etc. In our country alone last yearmany lives were lost because of thesinking of a number of sea vessels andalso in the aftermath of a number oftyphoons and floods which hit theland. Last month about 300,000people died in Haiti because of theearthquake which ravaged it.When things like this happen, we tendto wonder why. Some questions inevitablycrop up in our minds. Why doesGod allow these things to happen? Arethese people who die a tragic death sosinful as to suffer such a fate? Is Godcursing them? Was the Archbishop ofPort-au-Prince (capital of Haiti) whowas one of those who died so sinful thathe was not spared from the tragedy. The answers are found in today’s Gospelin which two incidents are broughtto Jesus for His opinion. The first oneinvolves the death of a number ofGalileans suspected of fomenting rebellionagainst Rome. Pontius Pilate, theRoman procurator, who was alwayskeeping a watchful eye on any sign oftrouble, sent troops to kill these Galileanswho were seen as a threat to Romanauthority or sovereignty. Their bloodwas mixed with that of animals sacrificedat the temple. Jesus asks the peoplebefore Him if these Galileans weregreater sinners than all other Galileansbecause they suffered that way. “By nomeans,” He tells them. And He warnsthem that the same thing will happen tothem unless they repent. The second tragic incident involvesthat death of 18 people when a towerfell over Siloam. Jesus asks whetherthese people were more guilty thananyone else in Jerusalem and He tellsthem by no means. He again pressesthe same wake-up call. The popular thinking is that disastersand misfortunes are retributionsmeted out by God for one’s sins. Itfollows that the bad thing thathap0pens to a person is a punishmentfor him owing to his sins. There is adirect link, a cause-effect relationshipbetween sin and punishment.Jesus turns upside down the prevailingbelief that suffering or misfortune is theoffshoot or result of one’s sins. We alsoHunger in the Midst of Plenty: Children of Kaingin, Nabitasan, Leganes, Iloilo, the Philippines © 2009 Ryan TevesTHE CALL ____________TO REPENTANCESTEVE C. FERNANDEZ, REFLECTIONSsometimes have the tendency to adoptthis view. So Jesus is making everythingclear for one and for all. The unpleasantthings that happen to people are notcurses from God. God is not a God ofwrath, who is vindictive, who is a policeand who does not look more at ourfailures and faults than what is good inus. We have a God who loves us morethan we could imagine, who is Abba.At times what happens to a person isactually malas at all. The adversity, the problem or the untoward incidencethat comes may be a blessing in disguise.God in His mind and purposehas something good beyond what happens. What do you say about of youngman who fell from a horse and brokehis leg. A few days later some men sentby the king arrived in their place to recruityoung and able-bodied men toserve in the army that would go to war.The Gospel reminds us not to be judgmentalof other people. Perhaps we havea wont to keep an eye on the lives of otherpeople that we may find something to talkabout. We have the propensity to makea rush conclusion when tragic or badthings happen to other people as if wewere perfectly good or immaculatelyclean persons.Lent, which reminds us of something lentto us by God which is no other than ourlife, is an opportune time to look into ourown selves if not to examine our own lifein order to see what need to be changedor rectified in us that our life will becleansed of its undesirable and unpleasantelements. Yes, there is a clarion callto conversion. It is only fitting and properthat anything lent to us we take good careof and keep clean as ever so that when itis returned the owner will have no ax togrind against us.True enough God is merciful, slow toanger, and slow to judge. He is the Godof second chance. However, God is nopush-over. Although He is patient in dealingwith us if not with our faults and shortcomings, yet He has His own justice inthe end. All this is mirrored in the Parableof the Gif Tree which Jesus relates. In the story the owner of the vineyardhas a fig tree planted in it. The ownercomes to the vinedresser complainingagainst the fruitlessness of the tree forthree years with the idea of having itcut down. The caretaker suggests thatit be given a chance to bear fruits in thefuture instead. If it still fail, then it hasto be hewn down. The fig tree is the symbol of Jerusalem. At the end of His three year public ministry,Jesus comes to the fig tree whichis Jerusalem and He comes to it lookingfor fruits. The parable is but a warningto the chosen people of God, Israel, whom God expects to bear fruits of righteousness, love and justice or else theywill be cut down. Jesus does not findthe people fruitful. God’s judgmentcame in 80 A.D. when Jerusalem includingthe temple was destroyed andmany were killed by the Roman army.As the new Jerusalem, the new peopleof God, we are expected to live a lifeof holiness and love, divesting ourselvesof the unpleasant and uselessthings we have come to love and befruitful for others. If there is selfishnessin us, cut it off so that we willnot just live for ourselves but also forothers. We may be one of thoseelected public officials who are lamentablydevoid of commitment, honesty, sincerity and dedication so that ourown interests will always take precedenceover public welfare or interest.God gives us not just one chance butmany chances to grow into the kindof person He wants us to be who hasa heart overflowing with love. Wherethere is kindness, sacrifice, forgiveness, peace and good will, etc. there is lovewhich is the hallmark of a true Christian.Life is an ample opportunity Godgives us to live each day trying to belike Him who is holy, compassionate, forgiving and loving. “Be perfect evenas your Father in heaven is perfect.”visit us: www.svfshrine.comMarch 7- 13, 20103

A LENTEN____________REFLECTIONEFREN G. GUMAYANSAN VICENTE FERRER:IG-AMPO ____________ MO KAMI!GERRY MONERA, BEC CornerThe line of a song says:“Let there be peace on earthand let it begin with me….”Yes, if we try to reflect on the happeningsof today’s world it seems thatthe absence of peace is noted far andwide, felt by people from all walksof life.During Lent, we reflect on what itmeans to deepen our walk with Jesus. How, practically, can we do that? What can we do to follow Christ effectively? In Colossians 3:12-17, Paulsuggests some useful principles for us…First, and fundamentally, we need tolet the peace of Christ rule in our heart“Let the peace of Christ rule in yourhearts, since as members of one bodyyou were called to peace. And bethankful.” We may be getting older butyou’re experienced if you’ve beenworking with Christ you’re wiser. Asyou carefully and prayerfully chooseyour place, you can make a differencein the spiritual and physical welfareof the world your in.In my Lenten reflections, I have beenthinking long and hard about whatrules my heart. I have been attendingto my thinking and my desires. I feela long way from the ideal that Paulsuggests here. The peace of God doesnot seem to be my default position. So,I am asking myself today exactly howwe can experience that peace…Paul reminds us that the peace of Godis not fluffy or mystical: the peace ofGod is practical (vs.14): “As God’schosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.Bear with each other and forgivewhatever grievances you mayhave against one another. Forgive asthe Lord forgave you.”Fundamentally, the peace of Godrule if we forgive those who havehurt us. It is the way of Christ. Wecannot walk away from it. Whenyour work on earth is done- whatthen? You will guide me….. and afterwardreceive me to glory. “What4 March 7- 13, 2010ever your age, condition, or circumstances,if you’re a Christian, thehope of heaven is yours! And that desire to forgive will onlyhappen as we allow the word of Godto shape our minds (vs.16): “Let theword of Christ dwell in you richly asyou teach and admonish one anotherwith all wisdom, and as yousing psalms, hymns and spiritualsongs with gratitude in your heartsto God.”The old adage is true that, ‘We arewhat we eat.’ And so it is also true thatwe are what we fill our minds with.We are what we give our minds to.If we want to be wise, then we mustlet the Word of Christ dwell in usrichly. I am more and more convincedthat we must make Scripturea top priority in our life. We need toread, study, memorize, meditateand apply. As we do that, so the name of Christwill increasingly determine our actions(vs.17): “Whatever you do,whether in word or deed, do it all inthe name of the Lord Jesus”.In Paul’s day, a name wasn’t justsomething to call a person. A namesignified the whole person - a person’scharacter. When Paul says do everythingin Jesus’ name, he’s saying actconsistently with Jesus’ character: actthe same way Jesus would do if hewere in our place. And Paul’s statement is completelycomprehensive: “Whatever you do”he says, “in word or deed.” “Do it allin the name of Jesus”.Lent is a period to reflect on our walkwith Jesus. It seems increasinglyclear to me that peace will only comeas I learn to transform the relationshipsI have; with others and with myGod. I must learn to forgive. I mustlearn to accept forgiveness. I need toallow the word of God to dwell in medeeply so that I can grow in holinessand glorify the name of Christ in allmy activities. That is quite some challenge…Bisan sa diin nga barangay sangLeganes amo ini ang masami ngaaton mabatian nga komentaryo:“Kabudlay kuno tipunon sang mgapumuluyo sa barangay sa anumannga seminar, pilgrimage, recollectionkag iban pa nga programang pastoralnga ginahiwat sang simbahan saila katilingban.Apang sa tion nga mayinugpanghatag nga bulig angparokya bisan kuno indi mo silapagpahibaluon madasig langmaglapta ang balita kag nagaagawanpa sa paglinya.”.
