Message fromthe ChairThe dream of buildinga new Art Gallery beganalmost 12 years agoand at year-end 2009we reached the top ofthe mountain—projectcompletion! As we celebrate this community accomplishment twothemes stand out.The first was assembling the funding. It began with thequiet philanthropy of leadership donors like John andBarbara Poole, John and Maggie Mitchell, Prem and SarojSinghmar, Buddy Victor and Alex Osten. It continued withnearly 1,000 private individual and corporate donors whohave contributed $22-million throughout the four yearpublic campaign. During 2009 alone, private individualand corporate donations totaled $5-million.The truly visionary $68-million support by all orders ofgovernment ensured that the vision became a reality. The Government of Canada was first to announceformal financial support of this project and its twoinvestments totaled $20-million. These dollars werecritical in rallying support and encouragement for theproject and sent the message that Canada was behindus as we endeavoured to create an art gallery of nationalsignificance. The Government of Alberta also played a leading role insupporting this ambitious project with two significantcontributions totaling $27-million. The provincialgovernment supported the concept of quality of lifeinvestments, such as the new AGA, which will be partof the environment that will help attract and retain thetalented people Alberta needs.Under the leadership of Mayor Stephen Mandel,Edmonton City Council championed the AGAproject since day one. City Council made a historic, courageous and unanimous decision to invest $21million in creating a museum gathering place for allEdmontonians, Albertans and our visitors. Our small band of AGA staff, the Capital CampaignCabinet, the many volunteer fundraisers, and theoutstanding support of Alexandra Truscott, wereintegral to the tremendous success of a CapitalCampaign that raised $90-million.The second theme relates to the creation and theconstruction of our remarkable building. Talented, committed and motivated people made this projecthappen. The building structure started with a spark of inspiredcreativity inside our architect Randall Stout and histerrific team and design consultants. Their tremendoustalents created a structure that fulfills the AGA’s dreamof an iconic building.Taking the cyberspace plans and actually making thebuilding a reality fell to the Ledcor construction teamand the many skilled men and women employed by anincredibly wide-range of subcontractor companies. BobWalker and his entire team are to be congratulated fortwo and a half years of focused effort that produced aquality top-tier art museum.Rick Arndt, the AGA’s project manager, was a very keyfactor in the project’s success. His attention to detail,hands-on approach and thousands of hours of effortkept the project on course and on budget. In addition to all the energy directed towards completingthe building, 2009 was also a year of significantorganizational transformation as the AGA addedstaff capacity to manage a whole new level of Galleryoperations. This has been a game changer for the AGA!In October the Gallery welcomed a new ExecutiveDirector, Gilles Hébert, to take over the leadership of theorganization as we move forward.Team AGA—the Board of Directors and tireless staffled by Gilles Hébert, Catherine Crowston, Scott Nye,Shannon Zwicker and Oksana Gowin, made invaluablecontributions to the design, construction andoperational planning phases of this project. They alldeserve a large thank you for their efforts. From the perspective of March 2010 we can report thatthe final chapter of the project—the “Opening WeekendCelebration” was an undeniable success. More than25,000 Albertans attended the events and enjoyed theoutstanding exhibitions displayed in their magnificentnew building. This tremendous interest and supportvalidated the countless hours of effort by all involved indelivering the project. This is a historic moment for the AGA. It is our dreamthat a rebuilt, renewed Art Gallery of Alberta willserve as a cultural centre of excellence for the Albertacommunity today, and for generations to come.Allan E. ScottChair, Board of Directors, Art Gallery of Alberta42009 Report to the Community
