15Awards Sixteen Scholarships for AY 2005-2006Miss Heather R. VrielandGoose Creek, SCHendel ScholarshipHeather Vrieland from Goose Creek, SC,will be a junior at Calvin College in Michiganthis fall. She is an outstanding student. Herprofessors in Chinese and Japanese, for thepast two years encompassing four Japanese and two Chineselanguage courses, say she is a model student, the best they have hadin twenty-six years of college teaching. Heather is always enthusiastic,extremely attentive, responsive, and good humored. She has a rareperfect 4.0 grade point average at a college that prides itself onrigorous grading in an age of grade inflation. The college saysHeather is mature beyond her years which lends to her ability tomanage time effectively and to complete tasks thoroughly.Miss Jessica L. StarkNew York Mills, NYSchultz ScholarshipJessica Stark plans on majoring inPhysical Therapy at Utica College. Hergrandmother had a very positive influenceon her life. When her grandmother felltragically ill, she had to learn to take care of her. When shepassed away, her spirit inspired her and continues to inspire her tobecome a physical therapist. One of her employers wrote that in1990, when her father was recalled for Desert Storm, Jessicabecame an important part of the support structure for her mother,grandparents, and, most importantly, her father. She was there forall of them. Her decision to pursue a career in health care is anatural result of her life experience.Miss Janine J. JansonSouthbury, CTHendel ScholarshipJanine Janson of Southbury, CT, plans onattending Hofstra University in the state ofNew York. She is a Communications major.Janine is involved with the Navy Sea CadetCorps that works with youths to develop discipline and leadershipskills as well as to learn Navy core values. Aside from the SeaCadets, her main passion is the arts and theater. She has done atotal of nine shows in entirety and is excited about the prospect ofthe stage. She would like to continue with theater in college as aminor. Her science teacher considers her a responsible andmature young woman who has the potential to excel academically incollege.Miss Janelle E. PuhrmannWaverly, IAUSAA ScholarshipJanelle Puhrmann will be a senior, atIowa State University, whose major isChild, Adult, and Family Services. She wasraised in a loving, religious home; and herchoice of a career pattern in the field of caring for others iscommendable. The family financial situation has been inupheaval for nearly two years. Extraordinary medical expenses,job loss, and the necessity of supporting those children attendingstate universities have thrown the family finances into chaos.Janelle has worked during college and summers to help financeher college education.Miss Rachel R. JewSan Diego, CADorothy Smith ScholarshipRachel Jew will be a senior at PointLoma Nazarene University in San Diego,CA. Her major is in Nursing. As a secondchild in a family of six children, she becamelike a second mother to the younger offspring. This quicklytaught her the value of patience, diligence, compassion, selfcontrol, and the ability to be demanding when appropriate.She is a member of the Student Nurse <strong>Association</strong> and volunteersconsiderable amounts of her time to their Outreach to theCommunity programs. The faculty reports that Rachel’sscholastic abilities and general aptitude are exceptional. She is a<strong>Reserve</strong> member of the Navy Nurse Corps and has been awardeda NROTC scholarship.Mr. Kevin C. CosselIdaho Falls, IDDorothy Smith ScholarshipKevin Cossel will be a sophomore this fallat the California Institute of Technology. Heenjoys the challenge of taking the hardsciences at Caltech and is taking as manyclasses in a variety of subjects as possible. Double majoring inChemistry and Physics is a consideration. He has been involvedin four research projects since his second year in high schoolat four different institutions. At present, he is involved in a schoolcompetitive project to compete in a race of 150 miles in a fullyautomated vehicle and complete the race in less than ten hours.NRA NEWS/SEPTEMBER 2005
