AaronDecatur, GAMellish/Weeks ScholarshipMargaret L. Aaron is known as Maggie.She wants to become a cook, not an ordinarycook but a chef skilled in the culinary artsand have her own restaurant. To further thatambition, she plans to enroll at Johnson and Wales University inCharlotte, NC, which is one of the nation's top culinary schools.Maggie comes highly recommended as a qualified child careprovider. Her employer trusts her to care for her two children inthe swimming pool even though the youngest does not know howto swim. Her last employer says Maggie is a resourceful, creative,and solution-oriented person. She is energetic at work and highlyrespected by colleagues, employees, suppliers, and customers alike.We wish Maggie “bon apétite.”Miss Mary E. CalvertGranite Bay, CAMellish/Weeks ScholarshipMary Calvert is a junior at CaliforniaPolytechnic State University at San LuisObispo, CA. She is pursuing a major inPhysical Science. Although she did notreceive an athletic scholarship her freshman year, she made thetrack running team as a walk-on. In high school, she receivedmany honors and took advanced placement courses such aschemistry, physics, calculus, and statistics because she liked thechallenge. College was a shock regarding the difficult curriculum,but she loves every minute of it. Science and math have alwaysbeen of huge interest to her. After she graduates from CALPOLY,she actually plans on joining the Navy and going to dentalschool. Her ultimate goal is to become a dentist or oral surgeon.She works summers at a golf course and at a physical therapyclinic.Miss Brittany K. HughlettSanta Paula, CAMellish/Weeks ScholarshipBrittany Hughlett will be a senior at theUniversity of California at Santa Barbara,taking a Bachelor of Science degree inZoology. In addition to her regular schedule,she will be volunteering at the UCSB Marine Science InstituteREEF (Research Experience and Educational Facility). Thisinvolves leading K-12 visitors on tours of the marine facility.Secondly, she will be volunteering at the Santa Barbara Museumof Natural History, Sea Center. She hopes to join a research studygroup based in Costa Rica. Her assignment there will be tomonitor and record the nesting habits of queen sea turtles. It willalso earn her five credits toward her UCSB degree.Miss Jana E. GilliesLynden, WAHamilton ScholarshipJana Gillies wants to become a nurse sothat she will be able to help others who livewith medical conditions such as her mother’smultiple sclerosis. She wants to be able toprovide empathy and compassion to others. Jana’s first work wasas a farm hand at the age of 14 in the berry fields of WashingtonState. At 16, she got a second job as a nurse’s assistant at a healthcare center, providing care to the elderly. This was challengingboth emotionally and physically, but inspiring. Jana is theyoungest child in a large family and is expected to cover most ofher course costs at Washington State University. We wish thistalented young lady the very best.Mr. Thomas J. O’Malley IIIHanson, MAHamilton ScholarshipThomas J. O'Malley III is a south Bostonnative who would like to be a <strong>Naval</strong> Aviator.He hopes that someday his mother will pinthe coveted “wings of gold” on his uniform.He has been accepted at Norwich University in Vermont with amajor in Criminal Justice. T.J., as he is known, has successfullycompleted an on-line course at Virtual High School, in additionto his regular high school work. Participation requires studentsto work independently, fully utilize technology, and be extremelydisciplined and self-motivated.
