SOUTHERN HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE TRUSTProcedure for <strong>Blood</strong> <strong>Sampling</strong> <strong>from</strong> <strong>an</strong> <strong>Arterial</strong> lineStatement:All those involved in the procedure for sampling <strong>from</strong> <strong>an</strong> arterial line must betrained <strong>an</strong>d competent in this technique.St<strong>an</strong>dard precautions should be adopted when sampling <strong>from</strong> <strong>an</strong> arterial line: ie,non-sterile gloves, <strong>an</strong>d disposable apron.ANTT must be usedStop the procedure <strong>an</strong>d seek medical advice if <strong>an</strong>y of following are noted Resist<strong>an</strong>ce is felt The inf<strong>an</strong>ts displays symptoms of pain Swelling is observed around the entry site Leakage of fluid onto the protective towel Redness around the arterial line site or along the artery Bl<strong>an</strong>ching of the limbEquipment:Cle<strong>an</strong> trolleyProtective sheet /paper towelH<strong>an</strong>d held <strong>Blood</strong> glucose <strong>an</strong>alyser (as blood glucose level is often done at thistime)2 x2ml syringes, 1 x5ml syringes<strong>Blood</strong> collection bottles as required1 pre heparinised syringe2% clinnell wipe (green)Disposable apron <strong>an</strong>d non -sterile gloves


SOUTHERN HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE TRUSTACTIONDecontaminate h<strong>an</strong>ds as per localpolicy adhering to 7 step technique <strong>an</strong>d5 moments of h<strong>an</strong>d hygiene. Put onPPEPrepare trolley for collection of bloodsamples using ANTT <strong>an</strong>d engage <strong>an</strong>assist<strong>an</strong>t to helpPlace protective paper towel in theappropriate place surrounding thearterial access deviceCle<strong>an</strong> hub of red 3 way tap with Clinellwipe <strong>an</strong>d allow to dry for 30 secondsConnect a 2ml syringeOpen 3 way tap to inf<strong>an</strong>t <strong>an</strong>d syringe<strong>an</strong>d off to the baby <strong>an</strong>d withdraw 1 mlof blood.Turn the 3 way tap off to theinf<strong>an</strong>t/infusionRemove the syringeRe-access the device using a 2 or 5 mlsyringeOpen the 3 way tap to the inf<strong>an</strong>t <strong>an</strong>dsyringe <strong>an</strong>d off to the babyWithdraw the qu<strong>an</strong>tity of blood requiredfor sample <strong>an</strong>alysis. If blood gas isrequired re- access hub attaching thepre heparinised syringe <strong>an</strong>d withdraw0.2mls of blood for blood gas <strong>an</strong>alysis.Throughout the process of removal ofblood observe closely the c<strong>an</strong>nula site<strong>an</strong>d surrounding area for <strong>an</strong>y redness,swelling, bl<strong>an</strong>ching.Turn the 3 way tap off to hub. Open toinf<strong>an</strong>t <strong>an</strong>d infusionRemove the syringe containing theblood sample or samplesRe-attach the syringe containing wasteblood, open the 3 way tap to the inf<strong>an</strong>t<strong>an</strong>d slowly infuse.Remove syringe <strong>an</strong>d turn 3 way tap offto the hub.RATIONALETo minimize risk of infectionTo reduce risk of tr<strong>an</strong>smission of microorg<strong>an</strong>isms<strong>an</strong>d contamination of sterilefieldTo prevent soiling of cot/incubator bed<strong>an</strong>d unnecessary h<strong>an</strong>dling of inf<strong>an</strong>t asa resultTo minimise risk of infectionTo facilitate blood samplingThis is waste blood which withdrawsdead spacer, clears the c<strong>an</strong>nula <strong>an</strong>d 3way tap of heparin, old blood <strong>an</strong>d smallemboliTo obtain blood samplesTo minimise blood sampling waste
