THE NEW SCHOOLBACKGROUNDThis is a brand new Community Secondary School, which is being created from anamalgamation of the existing Aberdare Girls, Aberdare High and BlaengwawrComprehensive Schools.The new school is due to open in September 2014, in a new, state of the art buildingwhich is to be constructed on the site of the Michael Sobell Sports Centre, which islocated in the centre of Aberdare. The school will share its site with a new SportsCentre, swimming pool, athletics stadium and numerous other sports pitches,including a floodlit all weather facility.A proportion of the funding for the school element of this scheme is being obtainedfrom the Welsh Government’s 21 st Century Schools initiative.The school is being constructed to have a capacity of between 1600 and 1700pupils, and is expected to have a pupil roll of approximately 1450 students when itopens, including 6 th form. We anticipate that this number will rise in subsequentyears, in line with rising pupil numbers in the ‘feeder’ Primary schools in the area.There is also new housing development being proposed for the school catchmentarea.An indicative site layout plan for the new school and sports facilities, which will alsobe open to the general public, is attached. This may be subject to alteration prior toplanning permission being sought.
