3. THE NEW SCHOOLBACKGROUNDThis is a brand new Community Secondary School, which is being created from anamalgamation of the existing Aberdare Girls, Aberdare High and BlaengwawrComprehensive Schools.The new school is due to open in September 2014, in a new, state of the art buildingwhich is to be constructed on the site of the Michael Sobell Sports Centre, which islocated in the centre of Aberdare. The school will share its site with a new SportsCentre, swimming pool, athletics stadium and numerous other sports pitches,including a floodlit all weather facility.A proportion of the funding for the school element of this scheme is being obtainedfrom the Welsh Government’s 21 st Century Schools initiative.The school is being constructed to have a capacity of between 1600 and 1700pupils, and is expected to have a pupil roll of approximately 1450 students when itopens, including 6 th form. We anticipate that this number will rise in subsequentyears, in line with rising pupil numbers in the ‘feeder’ Primary schools in the area.There is also new housing development being proposed for the school catchmentarea.An indicative site layout plan for the new school and sports facilities, which will alsobe open to the general public, is attached. This may be subject to alteration prior toplanning permission being sought.

6. LIVING IN RHONDDA CYNON TAFPlaces and attractionsThe region of Rhondda Cynon Taf has much to offer, whether you are looking forculture, shopping, sporting opportunities or all three. There are also plenty of placesto socialise.HeritageThere are plenty of museums and heritage sites to visit in the region. At the RhonddaHeritage Park in Trehafod, experience the great days of the nineteenth-century coalboom, as well as its decline. For Pontypridd’s story, pay a trip to the Historical andCultural Centre, found beside the single-arch pack-horse bridge, built in 1756. Factfinders may also be interested to learn that the Welsh National Anthem, Hen Wlad fyNhadau (Land of my Fathers), was composed here in 1856. It was also thebirthplace of one Tom Jones!The Great OutdoorsIf you love walking you couldn’t come to a better place. But it’s not just walkers whowill enjoy our spectacular views. If you prefer a less energetic approach toappreciating the great outdoors, you’re also in luck. We have some of the highestmain roads in the UK, with viewpoints at all the summits, and sweeping vistas of thepicturesque Brecon Beacons and the sea. Rhondda Cynon Taf is actually home to asection of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The magnificent stretch of country tothe south of the main peaks slopes west to the limestone country at the head of theHepste and Mellte valleys. You can walk into Powys on a path passing behind the100-ft Sgwd yr Eira waterfall. Near Aberdare, you’ll find the beautiful Dare ValleyCountry Park.SportsPontypridd’s Rugby Club is famous the world over, however there are numerousRugby clubs in the area catering for all age groups starting with the under 7s throughto seniors. The Glamorgan Heritage Coast stretches for 14 miles from Barry to Porthcawl. Withplunging cliffs, tiny secluded coves and breathtaking views make the Heritage Coasta must for walkers, cyclists or anyone with a love of the countryside. The wholecoastline is fringed with delightful towns, small villages and miles of footpaths andcountry lanes.You are also close to the Gower Peninsula that is both beautiful and unspoilt. Thereare many historic features located over an area that measures just sixteen miles byseven miles wide. Not surprisingly, such an enclosed peninsula surrounded by theBristol Sea and Atlantic Ocean, has become a haven for some of the richest wildlifeand varied habitats in the UK.
