In this position he workedclosely with industry, research and government bodies on behalf of the<strong>Association</strong>’s members.In his first few weeks John has visited mostState Branches and will continue to be aregular attendee at Branch meetings.This will ensure that AAPA can continue tosupport the individual needs of each state aswell as enabling it to use its national voice forthe benefit of our industry.In previous positions John has supported development of the coalindustry and has managed technical consultancies including preparingenvironmental impact statements for major roads. JuliaGillard, MP to brothers Michael, Richard and Hayden Sharpe at aceremony on Monday, 28 April.The award recognises the development of an innovative response tocomplacency in the workplace – an issue that can have significantimpact on employees’ health and safety. It can also impact on companyproductivity and credibility. AAPA training focuses on literacyWith funding from the <strong>Australian</strong> Government’s Workplace Language &Literacy (WELL) program AAPA has completed three comprehensiveresource kits designed for employees in the asphalt and sprayed sealingindustry. These kits provide detailed information on safety and productivityissues in a way which is readily understandable by those in our industry withlow levels of literacy or numeracy. However, the learning materials are alsodesigned to provide information to all personnel working in our industry.“Literacy and numeracy skillsshould not prevent an employeefrom working safely andproductivity in any workplace”The current resource kits are:Paving the Way Spraying Bitumen Successfully – Part 1 and 2Focus on Fire Safety.A fourth resource kit on working safely with hot bitumen is currently beingfinalised.Each kit includes a comprehensive User Guide and 1 or 2 interactive CD-ROMs designed to guide and assess employees. Occupational health andsafety is a major concern for all of our industry regardless of their level ofliteracy.For information on these resource kits or to purchase kits contact AAPA’s Training Centre on (03) 9853 5322.New chairman for AAPA Western AustraliaAfter many years in the industry Keith Box, Chairman of AAPA WA, has resigned.Keith was the Business Development Manager for Downer EDI Works and recentlytendered his resignation to take up a position as the Manager Operations Services atthe City of Mandurah.Keith, was formerly the Manager of Hot Mix in WA and has been a long term supporterof AAPA. Those many people who have met and worked with Keith will be particularlysorry to lose someone with such a hard working and cheerful attitude. But, I am surethat everyone wishes him every success in his new role.Keith enjoys a day off fishing.Keith’s position as chair in WA will be taken by Craig Hollingsworth from BGC <strong>Asphalt</strong>.Craig also brings a wide range of experience to AAPA WA. On behalf of Louis Nucifora,Chair of AAPA and all the staff at the AAPA office we congratulate Craig and lookforward to working with him.Ben Brock (Astec) presents to AAPA QLD & NSW BranchesBen Brock, President of Astec Inc., USA, gave presentations at the QLD and NSWState Branch Breakfast Meetings.ASTEC is one of the major international companies manufacturing and supplyingasphalt plants and Ben brought a large amount of knowledge and experience oncurrent developments and trends associated with asphalt plants.At the end of each presentation Ben waswarmly thanked by AAPA members forhis very informative and enjoyablepresentation. And for those luckyenough to attend we will all rememberthe Limo driver.He particularly highlighted the move towards warm asphalt in the US and theincreasing use of recycled asphalt pavements (RAP).The world’s focus on energy use (reduce costs and lower greenhouse gas emissions)is a key driver for warm asphalt, he said. Added to this is that warm asphalt appearsto have many other advantages such as less fuming and a broader applicationtemperature range. The use of water to foam bitumen was also highlighted.In relation to RAP, Ben advised that laid asphalt should be seen as a potentialresource and not a single use product.
