Uranium ore-forming systems of the Lake Frome regionLocality 3 (340434E ; 6647484N ) Mount Oliphant Plaque —Taking the track from Arkaroola Tourist Resort a few kilometers to the north there is a plaquededicated to Sir Mark Oliphant.A walk 50m to the south from the plaque along the track a small cutting exposes a section of theWoodnamoka Phyllite showing retrogressed andalusite crystals, evident as quartz–muscoviteaggregates. This indicates amphibolite-facies metamorphism in contrast to little evidence ofmetamorphism at Arkaroola. The degree of metamorphism has therefore increased markedlyover the 3km northwards from Arkaroola, as the basement inlier is approached. Scapolite,tremolite and corderite isograds are essentially concordant with the unconformity.The increased strain can be seen in the Woodnamoka Phyllite compared to the earlier unitinvestigated.Page 127 of 151
Uranium ore-forming systems of the Lake Frome regionLocality 4 (339780E ; 6648681N) Arkaroola Waterhole UnconformityContinuing along the track is a turn-off to the left to Arkaroola Waterhole. Immediatelyadjacent to the waterhole, ~50 m out of the creek and hidden in a small gully to the east, is themajor unconformity between a probable metavolcanic basement unit (~1575Ma) of the MtPainter Inlier and the basal Adelaidean Paralana Quartzite. The basement at the unconformity ispredominantly a quartz–muscovite–feldspar unit with rounded blue quartz phenocrysts (MtNeill Granite).Leaving Arkaroola Waterhole travel back onto the track and take another left turn after 50m.Drive to the boom gate of the entrance to the Ridgetop Track. Written permissionmust be obtained for entry from Arkaroola by way of a signed consent form which isgiven in limited circumstances. The road is blocked to vehicular traffic by a lockedgate. A 4WD vehicle and competent driver are absolutely essential from this pointon.Locations 5 to 10 are along the Ridgetop Track which is operated by ArkaroolaTourist Resort who run two daily tours. As the track is single lane and has fewturning places co-ordination with the tours is essential.Page 128 of 151
