Narcotics, Alcoholic Beverages, Controlled Substances, Chemicals and DrugParaphernalia or Stimulant DrugNo student shall possess, distribute, use, transmit, or be under the influence <strong>of</strong> any narcoticdrug, hallucinogenic drug, amphetamine, barbiturate, marijuana, or any other drug orsubstance, pursuant to Chapter 90 <strong>of</strong> the North Carolina General Statutes or any alcoholicbeverage, malt beverage or fortified wine or other intoxicating liquor, or posses, use ortransmit drug paraphernalia or counterfeit drugs, or inhale or digest any chemicalsotherwise altering the student’s mood or behavior. Provided, however, that the possessionor use <strong>of</strong> a drug authorized by valid medical prescription from a registered physician willnot be considered a violation <strong>of</strong> this rule when the drug is taken by the person for whom thedrug was prescribed, and is dispensed by a school employee from the <strong>of</strong>fice.Failure to comply with this rule will result in the following penalty:• Selling <strong>of</strong> drugs or alcohol: The first <strong>of</strong>fence will result in long-term suspension, with arecommendation for expulsion if the student is convicted <strong>of</strong> committing a felony.• Use, transmission, or possession <strong>of</strong> drugs, drug paraphernalia or alcohol: The first <strong>of</strong>fensewill result in long-term suspension. This will be reduced up to three (3) days if the studentand parent/guardian attend an approved education program.• A second or succeeding <strong>of</strong>fense will result in long-term suspension without theopportunity for shorter suspension by attending drug rehabilitation program.HazingHazing is prohibited. No group or individual shall require any student to wear abnormaldress or costume on campus, annoy another student, play an abusive or ridiculous trick onhim/her, frighten, scold, beat, or harass him/her or subject to personal injury.Other Illegal ActivitiesA student shall not engage in any conduct at school which violates any law <strong>of</strong> the UnitedStates, the state <strong>of</strong>North Carolina or any political subdivision <strong>of</strong> North Carolina in which the conduct occursand which isdetrimental to the maintenance <strong>of</strong> good order and discipline in the school.Failure to comply with the previous two rules will result in the following penalty.• Principal’s discretion based upon his/her investigation <strong>of</strong> the severity <strong>of</strong> the situation anda determination <strong>of</strong> the appropriate punishment within guidelines established by the Board<strong>of</strong> Education.FightingNo student shall intentionally hit, shove, scratch, bite, block the passage <strong>of</strong> or throw objectsat another student or other person. No student shall take any action or make any commentsor write any message to cause others to fight, or which might reasonably be expected toresult in a fight. Principal discretion can be used in all aggressive types <strong>of</strong> behavior.Failure to comply with this rule will result in the following penalty.• First Offense-……………….3-5 days OSS• Second Offense…………….. 5-10days OSS• Third Offense……………….10 days OSS and recommendation for long term17
