LUCY CONTRERAS Children’s Programs Spring Sprouts Stroll Bring your little buds for a sneak peek at what spring brings! Join our guided walk through the Gardens to view early bloomers as they delight in the timely change of seasons. all ages. Saturday, april 14, Noon-1PM A Tree-Mendous Celebration! You’re invited to an Old Westbury Gardens Tree-Mendous celebration honoring one of nature’s grandest treasures—the tree! Spend a fun filled day learning all about this natural contributor. Highlights include the basics of tree biology, how trees influence our everyday lives, crafts, plant giveaways and more! all ages. Recycling Initiative Help stop more than 61,000 pounds of crayons from going into landfills annually and support the Crazy Crayons Initiative, which recycles old crayons into new ones. arrive early and receive one free admission (child or adult) when you donate a box of used crayons (Crayola or other american brand only). Sunday, april 29, 10–11aM “Soak up the Love” Drop-in Activities Sunday, april 29, 10aM–3PM Family Tree Walk Discover the “ins and outs” of trees with volunteer docent Gene Lazaro. . Sunday, april 29, 2PM Celebrate Mother Nature’s gentle touch this Mother’s Day. Through hands-on investigations, junior herbalists learn the healing powers of plant fragrance. Children will use sensory skills to craft three unique tub teas for Mom combining dried flower petals and herbs in oversized bath bags. This is an all weather indoor event. ages 6–12. Garden Explorers 6 oldwestburygardens.org Through fun and creative activities, children will learn about the local Long Island ecology. Session I (6 classes, May- June) will focus on environmental conservation and sustainability. The program is designed for ages 6-12. Each class includes a lesson, a hike, and other educational activities. Fridays, May 18–June 22, 4–5PM $10 per class /$5 member. all 6 classes $50/$25 member. advance registration required. Garden Fairy Tales Help us find the fairies that have proven longstanding residents of Old Westbury Gardens for over 100 years! The Flower Fairies of the Summer by Cicely Mary Barker guides us on our journey to seek out fairy habitats amidst the magic of summer blooms. Children gather natural elements along the way to construct their own ethereal fairy home beside our East Lake Trail. all ages. Saturday, June 2, Noon-1PM “Are You Stronger Than a Rose Gardener” Celebrate National Get Outdoors Day and the Let’s Move Initiative while discovering if you’ve got what it takes to be our next Gardener Stars! This event cleverly sneaks fitness into fun and emphasizes the strengthening benefits of everyday gardening through relays, races, and quiz questions. are you up to the challenge? ages 6–12. Saturday, June 9, Noon–1PM Choose Your Own Adventure! Collect a Choose Your Own Adventure book at the green ticket booth to create a Garden quest all your own. Follow pages to spy new areas of the Gardens not usually seen by the general public. What’s your adventure? You decide! Saturday, June 30 Summer Camps. Wellness Visiting the Gardens Yoga in the Gardens Professional Kripalu Yoga instructor, Lorili Henry, leads students through a dynamic, yet gentle flow of postures and conscious breathing. Participants must bring a yoga mat, yoga strap, and towel. Thursdays and Saturdays beginning, May 3, 11:15aM–12:30PM $15 per session (includes Gardens admission)/$5 member Tai Chi Tai chi—a unique form of “moving meditation”—calms the mind, relaxes the body and strengthens the spirit. Sessions are taught by professional Tai Chi instructor, Linda Cafiero, and are designed for all experience levels. Wednesdays beginning May 2, 10:30–11:30aM, $15 per session (includes Gardens admission)/ $5 member Early Morning Walk Old Westbury Gardens is pleased to join the over 500 gardens and museums participating in Let’s Move—a comprehensive program of the US Institute of Museum and Library services to encourage healthy lifestyles. Take a guided walk through the entire 200 acre estate; along the way you’ll see the abandoned paddocks fields that have now become home to nesting birds and wildflowers. Registrations are processed in the order in which they are received. In the event we receive your registration after a program has filled, you will automatically be placed on a waiting list. You will be notified by phone if/when a space becomes available. We will process your payment at that time. If Old Westbury Gardens cancels the program (e.g., due to rain, instructor’s illness, or insufficient enrollment) you will receive a full refund.
