Introduction to Salvia
Salvia with their spires of
flowers with dozens of individual
florettes make an excellent
addition to any
garden. They are easy care
perennials, excellent for
hummingbird gardens,
thrive in hot, dry areas
where other plants aren't
happy. Salvia are also good
for cutting, offering an interesting,
slender form. The
Gardens’ head grower, Scott
Lucas, will discuss the traits
of varieties and advise on
plant selection.

Pruning Flowering Shrubs
Most trees and shrubs benefit from an annual pruning. Pruning,
when done correctly, helps keep plants in good form, rids a plant
of dead or damaged stems, and encourages new growth and
flowering. Join Maura Brush, Director of Horticulture, for a presentation
on pruning flowering shrubs in the garden.

Garden Consultation
ann Marie Zawistowski, the Gardens’ rosarian and cottage gardener,
provides consultations geared to the landscapes of home
gardeners, including a tour, descriptions of plant combinations
and garden design, and 20–30 minute one-on-one discussions.
Participants will receive a Plant Shop discount. Please bring a
sketch, photos, and other information detailing a representative
area of your garden.

Planting a Cutting Garden
Many of the flowers and foliage contained in the arrangements
in Westbury House are from the Gardens’ own cutting garden.
Head Gardener Scott Lucas will discuss how to plan a cutting
garden with suggestions for site design and plantings.

Everybody Loves Roses
Summer Rose Care
a tour of the roses at Old Westbury Gardens in the Rose Garden
and Walled Garden will be given by ann Marie Zawistowski, the
Gardens’ rosarian. a demonstration and lecture on summer rose
care will follow. Learn about proper fertilizing, watering and
dead heading to keep your roses healthy and full of blooms.
Please bring gloves and pruners to participate in a demonstration
of dead heading.

Sustainable Roses

on how to grow roses without the use of harsh chemicals. She
will discuss cultural practices, green products, disease resistant

Mozart for Children
Debbie Surowicz brings her award-winning program to the
Festival. Works by Mozart and other composers, carefully selected
for their appeal to children, are used as the basis for
story telling, games, movement and song. Extensive use is
made of hand puppets and easy to play small instruments and
other musical props.

honoring one of nature’s grandest treasures—the tree!
Spend a fun filled day learning all about this natural contributor.
Highlights include the basics of tree biology, how trees influence
our everyday lives, crafts, plant giveaways and more! all ages.
Recycling Initiative
Help stop more than 61,000 pounds of crayons from going into
landfills annually and support the Crazy Crayons Initiative,
which recycles old crayons into new ones. arrive early and receive
one free admission (child or adult) when you donate a box
of used crayons (Crayola or other american brand only).

Through fun and creative activities, children will learn about the
local Long Island ecology. Session I (6 classes, May- June) will
focus on environmental conservation and sustainability. The
program is designed for ages 6-12. Each class includes a lesson, a
hike, and other educational activities.

Garden Fairy Tales
Help us find the fairies that have proven longstanding residents
of Old Westbury Gardens for over 100 years! The Flower Fairies
of the Summer by Cicely Mary Barker guides us on our journey
to seek out fairy habitats amidst the magic of summer blooms.
Children gather natural elements along the way to construct
their own ethereal fairy home beside our East Lake Trail. all
ages.

“Are You Stronger Than a
Rose Gardener”
Celebrate National Get Outdoors Day and the Let’s Move Initiative
while discovering if you’ve got what it takes to be our next
Gardener Stars! This event cleverly sneaks fitness into fun and

through relays, races, and quiz questions. are you up to the challenge?

Wellness Visiting the Gardens
Yoga in the Gardens
Professional Kripalu Yoga instructor, Lorili Henry, leads students
through a dynamic, yet gentle flow of postures and conscious
breathing. Participants must bring a yoga mat, yoga strap, and
towel.

Tai Chi
Tai chi—a unique form of “moving meditation”—calms the
mind, relaxes the body and strengthens the spirit. Sessions are
taught by professional Tai Chi instructor, Linda Cafiero, and are
designed for all experience levels.

Early Morning Walk
Old Westbury Gardens is pleased to join the
over 500 gardens and museums participating
in Let’s Move—a comprehensive program of
the US Institute of Museum and Library
services to encourage healthy lifestyles.
Take a guided walk through the entire 200 acre estate; along the
way you’ll see the abandoned paddocks fields that have now become
home to nesting birds and wildflowers.

The tour schedule is based upon docent availability and are subject
to change.
Registrations are processed in the order in which they are received.
In the event we receive your registration after a program
has filled, you will automatically be placed on a waiting list. You
will be notified by phone if/when a space becomes available. We
will process your payment at that time.
If Old Westbury Gardens cancels the program (e.g., due to rain,
instructor’s illness, or insufficient enrollment) you will receive a
full refund.
If you are unable to attend the program you may contact our
office for a receipt, which will enable you to claim your contribution
as a tax-deductible gift.

Gardeners’ Fair
On May 19th, you will be transported back to the year 1958 for
“a Night in Old Havana.” This year’s theme, Rum & Rumba
promises authentic food, music and décor. Join us as we honor
Sherrill and Eduardo Canet for their gracious efforts in helping
to maintain Old Westbury Gardens as the world class historic
house, gardens and grounds that is it today. Tickets start at $300.
