The NIINconsists of a two-digit national codification bureau (NCB) code and seven digits which, in conjunctionwith the NCB code, uniquely identify each NSN item in the Federal Supply System. For example:Two NCB codes are assigned for the United States, 00 and 01. Code 00 identifies all FSNs (11-digitfederal stock numbers used prior to NSNs) assigned prior to 31 March 1975. Code 01 identifies thenumbers assigned after that time. The NCBs must be included and be correct, or the material may berejected or you may receive the wrong material.NAVY ITEM CONTROL NUMBERS (NICNs).—Material not included in the Federal CatalogSystem, but stocked or monitored in the Navy Supply System, are listed by 13-character Navy itemcontrol numbers (NICNs). These NICNs are readily identified by a two-position alpha code whichsignifies the type of NICN. This code and a seven-position alphanumeric uniquely identify each NICNitem in the Navy Supply System. Part numbers include old NSNs,FSNs, electron tube type numbers, and electronic equipment circuit symbol numbers.
