One of your New Year’sresolutions should be for rain on our golf coursesand community. As the Club moves forward in these toughdrought and economic conditions, we need to pulltogether to overcome obstacles that would keep us from achieving ourgoals. Do your part to keep a positive outlook. As I assume the 2009 Board Chair position, my special thanks tooutgoing Chair, Grant Morris. In a tumultuous 2008 year of hardshipsat Sonterra, Grant maintained the Board’s focus and guided the Boardthrough some contentious issues. To outgoing Board members MarianDyer and Gary Nedwed, our gratitude to you for chairing committeesand being active in Board issues, and to Mickey Gayler, outgoingChair Emeritus, thank you for your leadership, legal expertise andwitty commentary the past three years. Welcome to three elected atlargeBoard members Sue Colburn, Roger Martin, Stacey Semtner. Ialso welcome Margaret Millsap (SWGA President) and Peter Wojcik(Ambassador Council President).Expect to see more communication about Sonterra from our newGM, Mark Neneman. He is a believer, that where no information isprovided, false information and rumors fill the void. The Board looksforward to partnering with Mark to make Sonterra a Club we are allproud to tout to others.“So of cheerfulness, or a good temper, the more it is spent, the moreof it remains.” (Emerson)From the General Manager...Dear Sonterra Members:Happy New Year to you and your family! I wanted to say thank you to all of the Members I have met thus farat Sonterra. You have made me feel very welcome in your club and I truly appreciate it. With my family still inCalifornia, the Club is my home away from home. With the New Year we all have many things to look forward to. We have a new President, our national economy willhopefully turn, and we have a wonderful club to use and entertain in. In the three years that Century Golf has ownedthe club they have done many things to improve the club. I don’t have to tell you that, you live it every day. Onething I will do is Thank You All For Being Members. We still have some challenges to overcome. As your new manager I will assure you we will always listen, always care, and always be reasonablein our approaches. I have a lot to learn about Sonterra and I am doing it everyday with the help of Members and Staff. We will continue towork on improving our golf courses, club house operations, as well as Tennis and Fitness.I am excited to start the year with our first Board of Governors meeting in January. The Board and Management are committed to workingtogether in resolving opportunities we have with our club. In doing so we will keep you informed. I hope you have seen an increase inMembership Communication. In speaking of Membership, one of our key tasks next year will be to get our club to a wait list of Members. We need the help of Membershipin bringing your friends and associates to the Club so they can share in the Club like you have done. We have some great opportunities andwould like to share them with your friends. One function we are going to start again is the Cocktails with the Councils. But we are going to add a few controls to this wonderful evening. We will send monthly guest passes in your statement each month; each membership will receive two guest passes. The Scene At Sonterra Page 6Golf News-Jeff Hunter, Director of GolfAs we go to press, our Christmas sale hastaken place, but Santa has not yet been downthe chimney, I would like to thank you all for asuccessful evening and be the first to wish youhappy holidays and a great 2009! This has been a great year forSonterra and especially the South Course. I am confident that by thetime our 50th anniversary of the South course comes in April, bothgolf courses will be in great shape and take their rightful spots amongthe best in Texas. Thank you to everyone for your understanding andpatience while the South was under construction and the North wasso crowded. I implore those of you who have not yet played the southcourse, to get over there and play it. I hope your vision matches mineand you too see the future.GOLF CARTSWOW! We have had some issueswith our carts! Century golf is gettingus a NEW FLEET in March. The newcarts will be platinum in color, willhave sand buckets instead of bottles, and are the new hi-tech EZ – GOsingle pedal carts. As you know we log some hours on our carts andwe are rotating them out a year early!Speaking of carts…Many of the things we have worked on are beginning to slide.1) Be reminded that only two people may ride on a cart at a time.2) You may not ride on the back or ride three or four people inthe seats.3) Only two carts will be allowed per foursome. The starters will makeyou pair up on the first tee when using club carts. This will be agreat relief on cart traffic and hence the turf on which we play.4) If you inform the starter or the golf shop that you are walking, thenride on the cart, you will be charged an 18 hole cart fee. Onlydown the hill on #1 north or from #7 green to #8 tee north, willthis be allowed. This practice is not only dangerous, it is stealing. We will not inform you of who saw you, but will simply charge youraccount. Thank you for understanding.FAIRWAY FEATS:Congratulations to our following stars!Bruce WagnerHole in OneJay BielkeHole in oneBeverly Cardwell Eagle on # 5Dr. Allen Nelson Eagle on # 5Terry Riely Eagle on # 13Dr. Barton Eagle on #11The 2009 golf and club event calendar should be finalized very shortly, please watch this space and look for emails, posters, and annoyingsigns for all of our events.See you on the golf course, jeffGolf Wine & Cheese Sale

The Scene At Sonterra Page 7Turf Talk- Barry Carter, Director of Golf Course MaintenanceIt is no news flash that we are in a severe drought. To date we have still had only 13.5 inches of rain this year. To protect our turf during thistime we are taking several measures. First, on the North course we are rotating cart path only, either front nine or back nine, on a weekly basisthroughout the winter months. If you have any doubt about the effect of cart traffic on the fairways, just compare the still growing in fairways ofthe South with those on the North. The South course will continue to be cart path only on all holes. The drought has been so extensive that all of our wells have significantly reduced production, due to low water levels. Three of our wellpumps have actually had to be pulled and either reworked or replaced due to the strain of operating in these conditions. The geologist inspecting one of our TrinityGlen Rose wells said that it was the lowest he had ever seen that aquifer. I have addressed this situation and all of the works that we have going on to improve ourirrigation and well system in my ‘Around the Course’ newsletters. I will keep these newsletters coming so that all of our members can know the works and programswe have to address this situation. And everyone should know that the Golf and Greens Committee is very involved and dedicated to seeing that we take the rightsteps toward effective, long terms solutions to these issues.I will repeat a section from last month’s newsletter: While you are playing the North, please take note of our new green posts that read ‘RETURN TO PATHHERE’. These posts will be placed at the edges of all the par 4 and 5 fairways, and they indicate where golf carts are supposed to exit to the cartpath. You may go toand play a shot farther up the fairway but please return to the post to exit. We will move these posts every day or so, to prevent trails from being worn in and thinningthe turf. If everyone will obey these posts, we will be able to have good turn in those troublesome areas near the greens, such as at #1, 5, 12, and 15. This will onlywork with the cooperation of our members. So far, there seems to be a bit of a learning curve, but more and more members are joining in the effort to protect our turf. The repair of the lower waterfall on #6 North was successful. We are no longer losing any water around the wet well that supplied that feature. We will nextexplore the canyon wall of the upper waterfall for any cracks and crevices up there. The South course grass is continuing to grow and fill in, even with the cooler weather. Everyone has been very good about keeping their carts on the paths andthis has been a major factor to the turf’s progress. As the coldest part of winter approaches, we will monitor the number of rounds and the effect of play on the turf. Please take the time to read my ‘Around the Course’ email blasts when they come out. I will do my best to keep everyone up to speed on all of our projects andworks, where we are and where we are going.Sonterra Women’s Golf Association - Pat Hastings, Publicity ChairHappy New Year to all our wonderful SWGAmembers! Kudos to Miki Gardner, who notonly took home the “San Antonio Women’sGolfer of the Year” award for the second yearin a row, but also won the final San Antoniosponsored tournament of the year where shedefeated everyone who had placed in the topten in any city tournament during the year. A sign up sheet will be in the pro shopMonday, January 5th for those who would like to participate.Note from Shanna-Shanna Reese, USPTA Teaching ProfessionalIt is the New Year! Let’s think positive! Think only about things that allow youto focus on winning. For example, let’s say you wish to work on being moreaggressive and usually, in every point, there is an opportunity to be aggressive. When you see this opportunity, take advantage of it. Even if you do not win thepoint congratulate yourself for recognizing the “opportunity” instead of being angry for losing thepoint. Try this in every aspect of your game. Continuing to stay positive will put you on your way tobecoming a more confident and effective player.Note from Josey-Josey Trimmier, USPTA Teaching ProfessionalI hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and has had a chance to stop by the pro shop and see all thewonderful new items and lines we have added for the New Year. The winter months offer many newchallenges on the tennis court, one of these challenges being the wind. Most players hate to playin the wind and often approach the situation incorrectly, both mentally and tactically. The followingfour tips will help you win in the wind. First, you must realize when playing in wind that you willnot be able to play your normal game – a more cautious approach must be taken. You will need tocompensate depending on the direction of the wind. If the wind is blowing at your face you need toaim higher over the net and when the wind is at your back you will need to aim shorter in the court. If the wind is blowing left to right you should try aiming more toward the middle of the court.Remember, the wind usually causes mistakesso by evaluating the wind before each point wecan choose where we aim our shots and reduceunforced errors. Secondly, attack the net morewhen it is windy as volleys are great shots in thewind because they allow for quick adjustmentsto the ball. Many good players who prefer tostay at the baseline will attack the net more inwindy conditions because it is easier to adjust toa blowing ball. Attacking the net will also forceyour opponent to hit passing shots close to theline which can be a daunting task in the wind.Another tip in the wind is to put spin on yourshots, either topspin or slice. Flat shots requireyou to hit straight through the path of the ballwhich becomes more difficult when the wind ispushing the ball around. Swinging your racquethigh to low or low to high will make adjustingto the ball easier. Last, but not least, do notforget to prepare early. Getting in position withgood foot work early will allow you more time toadjust to a blowing ball. Small adjustment stepsjust prior to striking the ball can make a hugedifference in windy conditions. The wind can beused to your advantage if you maintain an optimisticattitude and follow these basic principles.Winner’s CircleCongratulations to the following memberswho competed in College Station, Texason Nov. 21 -23 and wonSuper Senior Sectionals. They are headed to Surprise, Arizonain April to compete in theNational tournamentCaptain Shirley Coleman, Carol Robalin,Lynn Bartek, JoEllen Whalen,Margaret Canby and Cherie Croom.WAY TO GO!!–––––––––––––––––––––––––––MEN’S LEAGUE WINNERSMONDAY NIGHT TUESDAY NIGHT1st Vick Meredith 1st John Cavender2nd Horace Ayers 2nd Rodolfo Macias3rd Roberto Castillo 3rd Mark Frazier4th Earl Cutler 4th Brad Burke–––––––––––––––––––––––––––Congratulations to Ryan Andersonfor coming in 1st place in the Boys 14’s divisionin the Laredo Zat Tournament December 5-7.He has now qualified to play in thenext division which is “Champs.”All the hard work has paid off.
