Osmanlı Dönemi’ne aitmuhteşem oyma tavanlarıyladikkatleri çeken bu binayımuhakkak görün. Belgrad’dabulunan 250 camiden günümüzdeayakta kalan tek cami BayraklıCamii. İnşa tarihi bilinmemeklebirlikte camiyi Kanuni SultanSüleyman’ın şehri muhasaraederken yaptırdığı sanılıyor. Ancakbaşka bir rivayete göre cami, II.Viyana kuşatmasından sonra,II. Sultan Süleyman zamanında,1690’da yapılmış.Adının Bayraklı Camii olmasınınsebebi, geçmişte Belgrad’dabulunan diğer camilerle aynıanda ibadete başlanmasınısağlamak için bayrağın minaredewas inhabited by a Thraco-Daciantribe, Singi. Because of its strategicposition, the city witnessedcountless wars during the AncientAge, and it was razed to the ground44 times. <strong>The</strong> city, which wasruled by the Byzantine Empire, theFranks, the First Bulgarian Empire,the Kingdom of Hungary, and theSerbian Despotate during the MiddleAges, was captured by the OttomanEmpire in 1521 and became aSanjak (an administrative division).<strong>The</strong> only mosque still standingAs one of the oldest cities in Europe,Belgrade was not able to maintaincontinuity in terms of its historicalassets, for, as we said, it witnessedtoo many wars; nevertheless, thereare many historical works in thecity. <strong>The</strong> Old Palace, built in 1884,is the seat of the City Assembly.You must see this building, whichattracts attention with its impressivecarved ceilings dating from theOttoman era. <strong>The</strong> only survivingmosque in Belgrade, which oncehad 250 mosques, is the Bajrakli(“with flag”) Mosque. Although itsdate of construction is unknown,supposedly, it was built by SultanSuleiman the Magnificent whilebesieging the city. However,according to another rumor, themosque was built during the reign ofSultan Suleiman II in 1690, after thesiege of II. Vienna.Supposedly, it was named theBajrakli Mosque, because of theflag on its minaret used as a signalmaking simultaneous prayers inthe different mosques in Belgradepossible. <strong>The</strong> mosque was convertedinto a Catholic church between1718 and 1739, and it was largelydamaged during the German raidsbetween 1941 and 1944.
