Theanswer is computational mathematics. As an interdisciplinary stream,computational mathematics involves very complex, computer-assistedΩcalculation and solves physical and engineering problems by computersimulation, in order to provide timely and effective solutions.Prof. Michael Ng of Mathematics Department and ExecutiveDirector of HKBU’s newly established Institute for ComputationalMathematics (ICM) explains: “Computing plays an essential role inthe field of computational mathematics. Unlike pure mathematics,computational mathematics combines theories and computerimplementation.”Prof. Franklin Luk, Vice-President (Academic) and Director ofICM, uses aerospace technology to explain how computationalmathematics could be applied. “When launching the Chang’e 1spacecraft, it was impractical to have a trial launch. By making use∑Outstanding scholars to research at ICMThe University has invited internationally renowned academics to serve as advisors for ICM. Prof. Eugene Tyrtyshnikov,a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, will serve as the Distinguished Visiting Professor and a member of theInternational Advisory Board for ICM. He will visit the University in June and spend about three months in each of the comingthree years at HKBU to promote research and teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses.The ICM’s International Advisory Board comprises world renowned academics who are all Fellows of the National Academiesof their own countries. They are Prof. Shi Zhongci from the Mainland, Prof. Stanley Osher from the USA, Prof. Heinz W. Englfrom Austria, Prof. Richard OBrent from Australia, and Prof. Nicholas J. Higham from the UK.Prof. Luk says: “ICM will act as a focal point creating synergy among mathematicians, engineers and scientists from abroad spectrum of disciplines. As it madeits journey across Hong Kong, the torch relay was cheered along its way by people from every walkof life.The day was unforgettable for staff and students of HKBU, especially the representatives fromthe University, who formed part of the historic Olympic Torch Relay in their capacity as Olympictorchbearers.Shortly after midday in Shatin, Prof. Ng Ching-fai, President and Vice-Chancellor, passedthe flame to student fencing athlete Bjork Cheng. Later President Ng said he felt “moved” at thatmoment. Bjork described the experience as “wonderful and unforgettable”.At around 2:30 p.m., six HKBU torchbearers returned to campus in full “torchbearer” uniformto be greeted by two hundred students and staff outside the Lam Woo International ConferenceCentre. They each took a moment to share how they felt about being a torchbearer with gatheredcolleagues and students.Table-tennis duo Li Ching and Ko Lai-chak promised to attain their best possible results afterseeing so many supporters along the route. Fencing athlete Yeung Chui-ling said that being a torchbearerwas double-happiness for her as she had just learned that she has qualified to compete in the BeijingOlympics. Basketball athlete Tam Wai-yeung, who carried the torch on the Tsing Ma Bridge section,said he didn’t feel as lonely as he may have looked on TV, because he believed that everybody atHKBU was cheering him along. Prof. Franklin Luk, Vice President (Academic) and Mr. Andy Lee,Vice President (Administration) and Secretary, were on hand to distributegifts to secretaries in appreciation of their service and contributions tothe University.There are different stories regarding when and where Secretary’sDay was founded. But it seems most likely that it was part of NationalSecretaries Week created in 1952 by American Harry Klemfuss in conjunctionwith the National Secretaries Association. The purpose of Secretary’sDay is to recognise the importance and value of this position and thanksecretaries for their hard work. Sports Team on theFront Line走 在 運 動 最 前 線Sports are integral to our whole person education at HKBU, and at theWai Hang Sports Centre and the Dr. Stephen Hui Sports Hall you’ll findthe people at the very heart of this work and endeavour.Our sports centre staff are the University’s caretakers of sportsmanship;and they certainly have their work cut out. They number just 14 and haveto manage two sports centres which encompass two multi-purpose halls,three squash courts, two tennis courts, two studios, one fitness roomand a swimming pool. Onthe surface their jobs may seem easy, as they areoften seen stationed at the counter handling the bookingof facilities. He is assisted by Leung Chui-shing and Yuen Wai-ping, Assistant Supervisors (SC).Apart from ensuring user compliance with house rules and regulations, his small team is prepared tohandle any emergency.For instance, one Saturday evening when the black rainstorm warning was hoisted, Eddie Chungwas urgently called back. “The centre is located on a slope, so we were concerned that rainwaterwould seep into the Centre. We arrived just in time and had to clear the water immediately toprevent the wooden floor from becoming damp and warped.”They also have to renew equipment in the centres and keep abreast of the latest fitnesstrends. “We also organise leisure exercise programmes for colleagues. Yoga is undoubtedlythe most popular of these at the moment.”Although busy with her work, General Clerk Jenny Cheng, always remains cheerfuland welcoming. One of the reasons is the relaxing working environment. Mr. Lee explained that a few years ago when HongKong was undergoing a period of robust economic growth,many Mainland Chinese invested in Hong Kong dollars.However, recently the Mainland economy has forgedahead and now the yuan is a popular currency with HongKong investors.“Over the past five years, the yuan has appreciatedby 20 percent. One Hong Kong dollar used to equal 1.06 yuan in 2003, today this is 0.89 yuan. No one canpredict how long the currency will continue to appreciate.Mainland Government policy, economic growth in China,global competition, and macro economics are importantvariables affecting the currency’s value,” said Mr. Lee.In determining whether to buy a currency or not,investors often only look at the likelihood of the currencyappreciating and the interest rate. “Often they do nottake into account the exchange rate or the buy/sell price,which can prove the difference between making a profitor a loss.”Even though the yuan has appreciated for a periodof time, Mr. Lee believes it is still a good time to investBe a shrewd investor理 性 分 析The recent appreciation of the Chinese yuan has allowed many a shrewd investor the opportunityto register a profit. This issue we invite Mr. Simon Lee, Lecturer Iof the Department of Accountancy and Law and Assistant Director of the Centre for CorporateGovernance and Financial Policy to share his views on how to be a shrewd investor?in the currency, but cautions there always remain risks.“Colleagues looking to profit from yuan and reduce theirinvestment risk could choose to increase the proportionof the currency in their investment portfolios,” he said.“Another suggestion is to invest part of their capital in Chinayuan listed shares that offer stable dividend and the potentialto appreciate in their own right.”Mr. Lee added that cash should form a proportionof any prudent investment portfolio. “The ratio of cashcompared to other investments will depend on the levelof risk the investor is willing to take and the market situation.The general rule of thumb is thatcash should occupy 10 to 50percent of an individual’soverall investmentportfolio.”投 資 有 法人 民 幣 近 月 走 勢 強 勁 , 不 少 投 資 者 趁 機入 市 , 希 望 賺 取 一 筆 利 潤 ; 相 反 美 元 積弱 , 連 帶 掛 鉤 的 港 元 也 無 可 幸 免 處 於 弱勢 。 投 資 不 免 存 有 風 險 , 投 資 貨 幣 也 無例 外 , 今 期 《 浸 大 校 園 》 邀 請 了 會 計 及 法Mr. Simon Lee李 兆 波 先 生律 系 一 級 講 師 兼 公 司 管 治 與 金 融 政 策 研 究 中 心 助 理 主 任 李 兆 波 先生 (Simon), 與 大 家 分 享 如 何 做 個 「 精 明 投 資 者 」!Simon 解 釋 , 數 年 前 香 港 經 濟 蓬 勃 , 內 地 人 紛 紛 購 入 港 元 作 投資 ; 但 近 年 內 地 發 展 迎 頭 趕 上 , 人 民 幣 亦 隨 之 成 為 各 方 爭 相 追 捧 的 貨幣 。 他 說 :「 短 短 五 年 間 , 人 民 幣 差 不 多 升 值 近 兩 成 , 由 二 零 零 三 年的 一 港 元 對 一 點 零 六 人 民 幣 到 現 在 的 零 點 八 九 。 沒 有 人 能 預 計 人 民 幣的 升 勢 會 持 續 多 久 , 相 信 國 家 政 策 和 經 濟 實 力 、 經 濟 大 國 之 間 的 角力 、 宏 觀 經 濟 等 , 均 是 影 響 人 民 幣 升 跌 的 重 要 因 素 。」Simon 表 示 , 不 少 投 資 者 都 會 以 貨 幣 的 回 報 率 , 如 其 升 值 潛 力 或利 率 , 來 決 定 投 資 哪 種 貨 幣 , 但 如 只 著 眼 於 高 息 利 率 , 而 忽 略 整 體 市場 的 匯 率 變 化 和 買 賣 差 價 , 最 終 可 能 得 不 償 失 。Simon 認 為 , 人 民 幣 升 值 已 有 好 一 段 時 間 , 因 此 , 儘 管 現 在 是 投資 人 民 幣 的 適 當 時 機 , 仍 存 有 一 定 風 險 。 他 說 :「 同 事 如 想 賺 取 人 民幣 升 值 , 同 時 又 想 減 低 投 資 風 險 , 可 選 擇 在 個 人 投 資 組 合 中 增 加 人民 幣 的 比 重 , 但 又 不 致 於 把 全 副 身 家 押 上 。 另 一 建 議 是 把 部 份 資金 放 在 有 穩 定 股 息 而 又 具 實 力 的 中 資 股 上 , 從 中 收 取 人 民 幣股 息 。」Simon 補 充 , 現 金 在 投 資 組 合 中 所 佔 的 比 重 主 要 視 乎投 資 者 的 風 險 取 向 及 市 況 而 定 , 一 般 介 乎 10% 至50% 之 間 。 因 此 在 選 擇 投 資 貨 幣 前 , 應 留 意其 佔 整 體 組 合 的 比 率 。SPOT THE DIFFERENCECan you spot the 6 differences in photo B?找 不 同 你 能 找 出 兩 圖 中 六 個 不 同 之 處 嗎 ?Congratulations!恭 喜 您 !Answer to last issue’s quiz:上 期 答 案 :ACircle all six differences in Picture B and you will havethe chance to win a gift!
