JOINT FIRES TRAINING

JOINT FIRES TRAININGANTICIPATE TOMORROW -BE PREPARED FOR YOUR MISSIONSWith less access to live air assets andincreasing demand for professionalJTACs and other roles in the Joint Firescapacity, there is a growing need for acost-effective virtual training solution.JFIST® by Saab is in use today andprovides training to satisfied customersin all phases, from basic training tomission rehearsal. The development of the Joint FiresSynthetic Trainer (JFIST®) startedin 2005, with the analysis of Tactics,Techniques, Procedures (TTP) andlessons learned from current operations.Through close cooperation with inhouseSMEs and end users, JFIST® wasfirst released in 2009. From its inception, the system has complied with theconstant evolution of requirements andchanges in TTPs and equipment. JFIST®supports the entire spectrum of trainingtasks in joint fires and related missionsaccording to NATO standards (e.g.STANAG 3797 and JTAC MOA).2

JOINT FIRES TRAININGTRAIN AS YOU FIGHTJFIST® is not only a procedural ortargeting trainer, it is also a missiontrainer that takes training as close toreal life as possible. No matter whetherthe goal is the training of a partialtask performed by a single role, orcollaborative training including severalroles, JFIST® is built to handle all ofthem.SINGLE ROLE TRAININGWhen the focus is to train a single role,JFIST® can either simulate the othercharacters needed for the training or theinstructor can play them, to ensure thatthe complexity in training is as close aspossible to real life battle.COLLABORATIVE TRAININGThe design and development of JFIST®supports collaborative training, frombasic training all the way to missionrehearsal. By adding modules to thesystem, a variety of roles can be trained.• JTAC• JFO• FO• FSO• LO• Personnel in JFC• Personnel in TOC• Ground commander• Platform and sensor operators3

JOINT FIRES TRAININGTRAIN According to establishedstandardsJFIST® provides a variety of trainingcapabilities, all implemented to meetor to exceed the requirements ofexisting standards as well as currentTTPs. Standards, like STANAG 3797JTAC MOA as well as experiences fromongoing operations have driven thetraining requirements.• Type 1, 2 and 3 control• Control of indirect fire• Day/Night/Low/Medium light• Digital aided CAS• NTISR• Employment of guided weaponsand non-guided weapons• Integration of SEAD• Integration of CAS and groundscheme of manoeuvre• Airspace deconfliction• Battle damage assessmentTo enable standardization of training, exercises can be created or edited ina training facility or on a portablecomputer that can be brought intothe mission area. The new exercise orscenario can then be exported and usedat another training facility. The simplicity with which exercises arecreated, edited and exported allows theuser to rapidly meet new or changingtraining requirements and TTPs. Withfast and easy preparation, deployedforces can create scenarios for use inmission rehearsal or to export to trainingfacilities for pre-deployment training.4

JOINT FIRES TRAININGTRAIN where YOU FIGHTJFIST® 3D virtual environments arecreated from standard geo data incommon formats such as GeoTiff,Shape, DTED and SRTM. Using WGS84 as the geo reference system, theusers can train globally with accuratecoordinates in a close-to-real-life 3Dvirtual environment. The 3D virtualenvironment can consist of geo data indifferent resolutions merged into a singleenvironment. This enables the users totrain with the best data they have forevery area. With the ability to handle large terraindatabases, the instructor can easily andrapidly move between different trainingareas and environments. JFIST® handlesa large number of terrain databases. Each terrain database typically covers anarea the size of Afghanistan. The terraindatabases can be upgraded with new andimproved geo data, while keeping storedexercises and scenarios intact. Thisfeature significantly reduces the cost ofmaintenance.TRAIN FOR REALITYTraining for real life situations mustnot only consist of an immersive 3Dvirtual environment but also of realisticperformance, possibilities, constraintsand consequences. With graphicsof gaming quality, and high fidelitysimulation, JFIST® provides realisticstimulation of the senses. This minimizesthe risk of negative learning, enhancesthe level of realism, and enables thechanging of live runs with real aircraftto virtual training. The high fidelityof platforms, sensors and weapons, combined with the influence of physicaland environmental factors, creates avirtual training environment where thestudent’s mistake can be made in theclassroom instead of on the battlefield. This saves lives, significantly enhancesforce capabilities, and saves money.5

JOINT FIRES TRAININGINTuitive interfaceTo reduce the instructor’s workload, theinterfaces in JFIST® are intuitive andbased on Windows’ de facto standard.Creation and editing of exercises andscenarios are performed directly inthe 3D environment, in a 2D or 3Dview. JFIST® provides the ability to editongoing exercises and scenarios in realtime, during execution.Shortcuts can be used to get immediatedesired effects in the scenario. Thisenables the instructor to easily addentities such as IEDs, mortar rounds, shells, smoke, bombs, or small-arms fireinto the ongoing scenario and in realtime.AFTER ACTION /DURING ACTION REVIEWUsers appreciate the AAR/DARfunctions in JFIST® and their ease ofuse. The complex scenarios that can betrained in JFIST® demand a qualitativeevaluation to achieve full training value. The visual tools and access to all thesimulation data in an exercise, allow theinstructor to monitor and conduct anaccurate analysis of the exercise. This is an example of how JFIST®surpasses real life training since it offersthe opportunity to see how a targetreflects laser energy from a designatoror range finder and what consequencethis has.During the recording of an exercise, which includes, voice, video, entereddata and settings in the simulatedmilitary equipment, the data will besynchronized for playback. The AAR/DAR is essential forpreventing negative learning, especiallywhen used during the exercise. Theexercise and recording can be stoppedat any time to correct a faulty decision/behaviour and then started again. Therecording will then be completed withthe corrected behaviour. This results inincreased learning and reduces the timespent on training.6

JOINT FIRES TRAININGFLExible solutionHARDWARE CONFIGURATIONSJFIST® is a Windows-based system thatruns on standard PCs, including laptops.JFIST® is currently offered as a portablesolution, classroom trainer or at a Centerof Excellence.Simulated equipment can be connectedto all types of hardware configurations. In solutions without simulated militaryequipment, Saab provides realisticemulated replicas.• Laser designators• ROVER• Binos• Laser range finders• Spotters• Compass• RadiosVISUALIZATIONJFIST® enables connection to allvisualization solutions, from standardmonitors to full domes and headmounteddisplays. JFIST® solvescommon problems with correlationerrors between simulation models, ensuring that all viewers, in all phaseshave a synchronized picture of the 3Dvirtual environment, the scenarios andthe actions.INTEGRATIONThe modular and structural design ofJFIST® provides a low risk integrationof specific hardware and softwaredevices/programmes. Using SaabWISE Connectivity prepares systemsfor integration, so that integration ispossible with actual systems (BMS etc.)as well as external simulators, regardlessof protocol, with low risk and low cost.WISE Connectivity is a part of the WISEsoftware suite from Saab, a generictoolbox that allows connection of anysystems and gives full control of theinformation flow, the infrastructure, scenario generation, exercise executionand evaluation.WISEconnectivity7
