Messai NY, NY President Obama, are you and your Administration about to give financial support to Ethiopia’s autocratic ruler, Meles Zenawi, to help him carry out his cruel villagization program? Zenawi’s government is forcibly removing the Gambella, Benishangul-Gumuz, Somali and Afar peoples from their ancestral lands and deliberately turning whole communities into internally displaced peoples in their own country. Those refusing to be relocated are imprisoned or killed. Shame on US Ambassador Booth, claiming that the Gambella people are benefiting from the fruits of development, when many human right organizations and reputable journalists have written to the contrary. Environmentalists are also concerned that clearing more than 3.5 million hectares of land for the planned farms could have a detrimental impact on the environment, because many trees have to be cut which would destroy Ethiopia's protected game reserves, as well as the wildlife. The UN, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the UN World Food Programme and the World Bank have all written against such a policy in Ethiopia where famine stalks the country every other year. It is alleged that the Ethiopian government has leased out an area the size of France for 99 years, which is expected to generate a lucrative business. Global Financial Integrity’s (GFI) report dated May 12, 2011 “Illicit Financial Flows From the Least Developed Countries, 1990-2008” lists Ethiopia as the ninth top exporter of US$8.4 billion of illicit capital. As a tax payer, I am also against my tax dollars going to such a brutal ruler. 921. Hoover DouglasHooverD 922. Degu Balagru Hamburg, Germany 923. Lee Zeigler San Francisco, CA 924. Nunnu Amsale London, United Kingdom President Barack Obama history will judge you please do the right thing to protect those weak and hungry. 930. aytal newzendro Berlin, Germany The illegal sale/lease of land by Meles who does not represent Ethiopia and Ethiopians is illegeal. He should face International Justice for the Massacre he committed against the Anuak people. The illegal relocation of the Anuaks without their will and with the help of US tax money is not right and should be stopped immediately. 931. Ben Harnett Raleigh, NC This isn't right. Let the people live. Moving them for business is consigning them to death. 932. T Bosona stockholm, Sweden There is no sustainable development by forceful displacement. Poor people have right to live on their land. 933. zewudu zelalem sannyvale, CA 934. Hailu Yigerem AddisAbaba, Ethiopia Stop helping the tyrant Ethiopian government NOW!!! 935. Joan P Mencher New york, NY It is extremely important to stop the land grabs in countries like Ethopia. In the case of landgrabsd by Indian investors or government or China, taking away their own good farm land ti build 8 land highways and fancy upper class apartment complexes is clearly one of the reasons they are now taking away Ethopia's land. These investors need to be required to give up and grow food on their own land instead of putting down more and more concrete. 944. Derick Fay Riverside, CA As an anthropologist who has studied the devastating effects of forced resettlement on livelihoods in apartheid-era South Africa, I am appalled to see similar policies continuing in the present day. 945. tessea azeb Preignac, France 946.
