Greg Gunther - Australia’s first Vito 120CDI owner.Just me and my van.Greg Gunther is Australia’s first Vito 120CDI owner. Above is a snapshot about his three-litre V6 multi-stage turbodiesel cranking out 150 kilowatts (204 horses!). Whilst we’re unsure how the Vito 120 CDI would fare against itspartner (21ft Everingham race boat) we’re sure it doesn’t come standard with Driver’s and Passenger Airbags!

Fine foods fast. How Vito helps Nashikeep their promise.Of course, the secret to Nashi’ssuccess is getting all thisfabulously fresh fare out tothe stores in time to feed thehungry masses. Which is where aspecially refrigerated Mercedes-Benz Vito comes in handy. In thiscase, there’s actually two of them.An older and a newer model.Young Melbourne entrepreneur,Sam Nash, who set up Nashi in2002, describes the mini-fleetof Vitos as “ideal for city driving, because it’s just so versatile.”With speed being essentialand the challenges of tight cityconfines to overcome, Sam’sinitial choice of a Vito madeexcellent business sense. After extensively investigating theright van for his business needs,The Vito was earmarked as beinga step above the competition. With refrigeration being essentialto keeping the food fresh, theVito won points because it stillallowed plenty of space insideafter the refrigeration panelingwas installed. The Vito’s sheer practicality asa city runabout also impressedSam. “It drives brilliantly. It fitsinto all the tight city spaces andit has an excellent turning circle. They really do drive like a car”.Even though he still loves drivingthe older Vito, Sam and the otherdrivers have also grown fond ofthe later model turbo diesel. Fuelefficiency with the powerful CDIdiesel is also a great asset, withfill-ups occurring only every weekand a half. The Nashi Vitos are a well-knownsight around the city, with theirbold, simple graphics acting likemobile billboards for the business.www.nashi.com.auCatering/Head Ofice:(03) 9620 0995sam@nashi.com.auWith five very busy retail outlets inMelbourne serving fresh food toover 2000 hungry customers perday, Nashi is a company that isdoing big things in a hurry.Nashi is in the business ofdelivering freshly made ‘readyto-eat’sandwiches, baguettes, panini, salads, wraps and marketfresh juices bottled daily. Theircustomers might be time-poor,rushing in for their lunchtimebreak, but they are also lookingfor quality food, which is whereNashi has to deliver on theirpromise of ‘Fine foods fast’.The sheer volume that Nashigenerates is impressive for ayoung small business. Across fiveoutlets, they service the officeand leisure trades in key CBD andinner city areas. And just about everything is madein-house at one central location, ahuge kitchen in the basement ofAMP House. The kitchen preparesin excess of 1600 bread productsper day. This is also where theypoach their own chicken fillets, blend their own mayo andproduce their own speciality redpepper salsa.Because everything is preparedbeforehand, shop staff don’t needto spend two to three minutesmaking each sandwich and canserve as many customers aspossible in a limited time.16

for DaimlerChrysler CommercialVehicles said “This is sucha wonderful opportunity tocontribute to such an importantcause.First class delivery forSecondBite.Established in late 2005,Melbourne-based SecondBitehelps the needy by identifyingsources of surplus food and freshproduce and getting it to the rightpeople. The charity collects foodfrom a variety of sources suchas markets, restaurants, foodwholesalers and retailers. And now that they’ve takendelivery of a new Mercedes-Benz315 Sprinter van, things aremoving at a great pace. Evenwithout a dedicated deliveryvan but using a growing band ofvolunteers, SecondBite was ableto collect enough food to providemore than 80,000 meals last year. And 2007 is well on track for aneven bigger year. The first threemonths saw SecondBite distribute16.5 tonnes of surplus fresh food,2 tonnes of non-perishable goodsand 950 litres of milk; enoughto provide over 68,000 standardmeals. With the Sprinter on the job,SecondBite will be able to moveto a new level, replacing the needfor many volunteers to transportthe much-needed food acrossMelbourne in their own cars.Chairman of SecondBite, IanCarson said: “There is no shortageof people in need or food to feedthem; only the delivery model andinfrastructure to serve the need.”Echoing these sentiments, KenMatthews, Managing Director“The regular donations made bythe many generous restaurants, markets and food wholesalersneed to get to their destinationand our team is proud to providethat link with the Mercedes-Benz315 Sprinter.”A report by the Australian Institutein 2005 that estimated Australia’stotal food wastage was worth$5.3 billion a year. Further to this,a study by the Australian Foodand Grocery Council revealedthat the amount of water neededto produce this wasted foodwould be enough to supply all ofMelbourne and Sydney for a year.SecondBite has pioneered atransfer programme that canidentify large donations of freshfood with limited shelf life so thatit can be redistributed to otheragencies keeping wastage to anabsolute minimum. The self-funded charity distributesfood to over 25 agencies aroundthe greater Melbourne area thatrange in size from 10 to 400meals per day, and the demandfor their services keeps growing. For more information onSecondBite visitwww.secondbite.orgPino from Pino’s Fine Produce at the Prahran Market, a regular donor.24
