Computer forensic examinations by ICAC Task Forces.In FY 2008, 14,339 computer forensic examinations were reported; 19,269 computer forensicexams were reported in 2009. The goal of a forensic examination is to indentify files that containchild sexual abuse images. Forensic exams may include examination of video, text, or picturefiles; examination of chat logs, e-mails, or other communication programs; and / or examinationof file storage and structure. The level of effort required for a forensic exam varies greatly bythe size and type of device being examined. Investigators commonly seize multiple media in oneinvestigation, including: internal and external hard drives, flash drives, DVDs and CDs, cellsphones and other digital media devices containing terabytes of data in an effort to identifycontraband files.
