Hope of returning home at some point, howeverwishful, is one of the driving sentiments in the nursing home environment.Hybrid CareSheltered housing (both daily and 24-hour) combine the independenceand social network connections supported by home care with the inclusive,structured environments of nursing homes and other similar institutions.It provides a suite of inclusive services in an environment that is intendedto be more reminiscent of a resident’s previous house or apartment and feelless like an institution, and as such is more integrated with the surroundingbuilt and social environments.This hybrid condition takes on the <strong>for</strong>m of differentiated groups ofappropriate apartments clustered by care needs and embedded in a flexibleservice network. Services and experiences are in line with those ofhome care, with residents receiving a customized suite of services in anindependent apartment that is both tailored to individual needs and wellintegratedwith the surrounding area. This relatively new type of elder careenvironment remains somewhat loosely defined, and is still developing asa service and care archetype.D2.4 CitiesCombining concerns of housing and services as well as mobility, civicparticipation is the question of larger settlement patterns. How gracefullydo our cities age and how easily can they accommodate an ageing population?The paired trends of urbanization and societal ageing put increasedpressure on cities as a key site of innovation opportunity. Conceived in2005, The World Health Organization’s Age Friendly Cities programmeseeks to foster global attention to these issues by providing a set of key indicatorsranging from the built environment to political engagement.D2.5 Developments In Care SystemsIn <strong>Helsinki</strong>, nursing home services and structures are being altered asmedical and social care become more tightly integrated at the administrativelevels. As a result, nursing homes are expanding and becoming moreversatile service centres that are more closely integrated with home careand home service organizations and infrastructures.One objective is to <strong>for</strong>malize aspects of the expanding home care networkwhile impart some level of flexibility and customisation to the institutionalcare system. In general, the home care system, which includesservices and nursing, is seen as the ideal model, one that more institutionalsystems should try to emulate.292
