Junior OfficerColumnSurf-Rider in the SandBy QM3 John CobyLT Steven Michaels, USNPast National VP for Junior OfficersThis month I am honored to feature oneof the true heroes in the Global War onTerror. QM3 John Coby drills at NOSCGreat Lakes with the ACU-1 “Surf-Riders.”He recently returned from a ten-monthmobilization in Kuwait, and he’s kindenough to share his experiences alongwith some lessons learned for those of usnext on the batter’s deck.My name is QM3 JohnCoby, and I wasdeployed in July2006 as part of NavyCustoms BattalionRomeo in support ofOperation Enduring Freedom. I want toshare with you some of the things that Ihave learned and seen that, hopefully, willbenefit those of you who will be going ona deployment. The first leg of my deployment startedat Navy Mobilization Processing Site(NMPS) Norfolk, VA. We were introducedto our chain of command and were brokeninto groups of about 15 Sailors to movemore efficiently through the process. They fitted us for chemical, biological, radiological (CBR) gear; then, we tookcare of any legal and PSD issues and lastminute medical and/or dental problems.About a week into the process, we weredivided into ten training teams that wewould stay with throughout the next phaseof training. It is highly recommendedthat all Navy Knowledge On-Line (NKO)Individual Augmentee (IA) courses becompleted before arriving at NMPS astime is very limited there.During the next several weeks at a newlocation, we underwent intensive trainingin combat skills and physical fitness.Being in shape and within standardsbefore reporting for the deployment paysoff because the days were long and tiring. At this time, we received instruction onour CBR gear and had several weaponsqualifications. A couple of Sailors fromthe battalion we were relieving came tospeak to us about the mission we would beperforming and the quality of life there. Wewere divided into five different companiesand finally were told what location wewere to be serving. [For those not familiarwith joint assignments, a company hasfrom 75-200 members. Several companiescombine to form a battalion.] I wasassigned to a company in Kuwait. At thistime, we were given the chance to shipitems forward as we were allowed tocarry only one seabag and a kit bag thatcontained all of the CBR gear, Kevlar, armored vest (battle rattle), and a carry-onbag.We stopped at two different countriesfor crew changes and to refuel. Eventhough the flight was long, it seemed to goby quickly – thank God for that iPod! Welanded in Kuwait and were greeted by thesummer heat. Our first day, it was 135degrees Fahrenheit; and we learned the keyto dealing with it was to drink water andlots of it. It was a very dry climate; and theperspiration would dry off of you beforeyou knew it; making it hard to realize youwere sweating at all. During our tour, weexperienced a few sandstorms where eyeprotection and a scarf came in handy. After a couple of days off to adjust toour new surroundings and acclimate to theweather, we began our main job whichwas to inspect equipment and personnelfor contraband that might be harmful toreturn to the States. We had a secondarymission of ensuring the safety of all theSoldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmenreturning from the war. A lot of peoplewent through our gates, all of them heroes. The food service and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) facilities wereoutstanding. Phones and Internet weremade available, also. I quickly learned thatprepaid phone cards were like gold! Westayed in Kuwait the whole tour, buteveryone got a four-day R&R pass toQatar. This was on an Army base that hada great USO facility and other touches ofhome like a Chili’s restaurant by a poolwith a hot tub. Trips to go see some of thetown and beaches along the Gulf wereoffered by MWR as well. Needless to say, four days weren’t enough. But before we knew it, we were back atNMPS Norfolk to start the demobilizationprocess. Our time there seemed very shortbecause they were sensitive to the fact wewanted to get home to our families. Mytime in demob was just four days. Mostimportant, they gave out contact numbersfor the Veterans Administration (VA) incase we had any mental or physical issueslater. Then came my favorite flight ofthe deployment . . . back to my family inChicago.Upon returning home, I took intoaccount some of the things I learnedduring the demob process. I realized thatthings at home had changed and that timedid not stand still for everyone – thisincluded family and work. I learned to letthe readjustment process go slowly and todeal with issues as they came up; and, again, patience was the key word.I would also recommend gettinginvolved with groups like the NavalReserve Association, American Legion, and VFW. They have great contacts withthe VA and usually have members who areconnected there. It is hard to believe that more thantwo years have passed since CDR Phan(P-squared) first approached meabout being his relief as VP of JO’s.This has been the most amazingexperience of my career. I wish tothank my many mentors; the outstandingguest columnists; those whosent me feedback; and last, but notleast, the dedicated and wonderfulfolks at HQ. I’ll see you all at futureNRA conferences.14 NRA NEWS/NOVEMBER 2007
