Thenetwork deployment architecture mirrors the typical chain ofcommand of a battalion, enabling data and video to flow from thecombat team to the battalion headquarters. Secure, conferencedvoice communications are available at the squad level, and can bemonitored at platoon headquarters. The battalion, company, andplatoon headquarters equipment is easily installed in a vehicle tosupport nomadic operations, or can be established in a TacticalOperations Center. It also can be deployed using a portable case. Each echelon is linked into a native IP network offering secure,high-speed, survivable communications. The mobile, ad hocnetworking (MANET) capability of the Harris RF-7800M willallow the commander to stay in touch with his forces while onthe move. MANET is provided by the ANW2 waveform. At thesoldier level, the RF-7800S Secure Personal Radio (SPR) enableshigh-bandwidth transmission of voice, data, and video, and has anembedded GPS receiver for automatic location tracking. The RF-7800S Team Radio provides the platoon leader withadvanced command and control capabilities and options. He willbe able to receive live video streams from his squads, while at thesame time have a priority voice channel for communications tothe whole platoon. For finer control, the radio can be programmedso that each squad is a different talk group on the same channel(switch position) and the video to be viewed is selected by switchposition (e.g., switch 1 is video from first squad, switch 2 is videofrom second squad). At no time does the platoon leader have tosacrifice command and control of his forces to obtain video. The network facilitates the dissemination of situational awareness(SA) data, and utilizes the Harris FalconCommand software tomonitor the position and movement of soldiers equipped withHarris radios. FalconCommand, provided at the platoon, company, and battalion echelons, is a complete, sophisticated battlemanagement system (BMS) that allows leaders to share vitalbattlefield intelligence during mission planning and as themission unfolds.
