Houck has a highly distinctive artisticvoice, but also a refreshing, rolled-sleeves approach to his expression. He has an impressiveoutput – one born of commitment and his soul’s need to have its say.It was 2007’s Pride – a delicate and spare, haunted and haunting work of raggedcountry, bittersweet southern gospel and forlorn folk-ish drone – that first caused ears toswivel appreciatively in Phosphorescent’s direction. He followed it with To Willie, a tributeto country legend Willie Nelson, then 2010’s Here’s To Taking It Easy, an unapologeticallyenthusiastic plunge into country rock and rolling Americana. Now, his sixth album flashesyet another colour in the subtly shifting Phosphorescent spectrum.Muchacho reprises the understated melancholia and sensuous minimalismof Pride, while kicking up a little of Here’s To Taking It Easy’s dust, but it also strikes outinto more adventurous waters via rhythm and electronic textures.Muchacho is already described as “a clear departure from the honky-tonk classicrock of 2010’s Here’s To Taking It Easy, and an assemblage of underwater hymns redolentof both record’s spare, sometimes psychedelic predecessor, 2007’s Pride.”It’s indicative of Houck’s distinctive talent, dedication to his work and trust in his muse, then, that a temporary hurdle didn’t become a serious block. “I got clear of it by just gettingto work on the recording,” he says, simply. The record was produced by Wilco’s JeffTweedy, engineered by Tom Schick and recorded in Wilco’s studio in Chicago, IL, duringthe fall of 2012. Coincidentally, the release marks Low’s 20th anniversary as a band.“While driving through Chicago on tour, we finally stopped to visit Wilco at their studio,The Loft,” says guitarist/vocalist Alan Sparhawk. “They had invited us to come check it outseveral times over the years, but this would finally be the day…What really converted uswas hearing the new Mavis Staples tracks they were working on – big, simple, raw andintimate. Plans were made then and there.”The Invisible Way finds Low’s majestic melancholy in full bloom yet distinguishes itself withits starker, unadorned soundscapes, layered harmonies and drummer/vocalist extraordinaireMimi Parker singing lead on five of the 11 songs. The album tackles large issues(“the songs are about intimacy, the drug war, the class war, plain old war war, archaeologyand love,” says Sparhawk) in a confrontational manner that plays a stunning counterpointto the sublime hush of the music.FORHÅND 15. Hell YesThere’s little doubt that Marnie Stern lives up to her reputation as “the lady who shreds,” but forMarnie, shredding is not enough. After putting out three critically-acclaimed albums, Marnie couldhave gotten away with putting out another album filled with her richly layered sound, singularfrenetic finger tapping and almost philosophical lyrics. However, as anyone who has given her lastfew albums a good listen can tell, Marnie is not one to stand still. Instead she attacks her musicalevolution with full frontal bravado, reveling in musical risk instead of relaxing in the comforts ofthe known. Her new album, The Chronicles of Marnia, finds Marnie not only working with a new drummer(Oneida’s Kid Millions), but also passionately subtracting from her normally dense songstructures to craft a sound that is both familiar and wholly original. “I always gravitate towardsinterweaving and a more abrasive sound,” Marnie said about working on the new album. “I wasworking with Nicholas Vernhes from Rare Book Room Recording in Brooklyn, and he was theproducer. He wanted my voice clearer and fewer guitar parts. I tried it because I wanted to trysomething different.” The musical transformation evident on her new album isn’t entirelyunexpected, as fans who have listened to both “For Ash” and “Every Single Line MeansSomething” in a single sitting know. That same slow progression can be seen between 2010’sself-titled album and the forthcoming The Chronicles of Marnia. Marnie can’t help but laughwhen thinking back on her musical evolution. “I’m sure if I went from the first album to this one,I’d have a heart attack. Luckily it’s been gradual enough for me to enjoy the changes.” And there’slittle doubt that her fans will too. Even as Marnie evolves from what Pitchfork called her “art-metalmath-rock bubblegum pop” genre, fans will still find themselves jumping head first into the albumand quickly bonding with the emotionally resonant material, cascading hooks and transcendentalguitar riffs. Plus, the album shreds. She is Marnie Stern after all.Tuba Records - Karl Johansgt. 6 - 0154 Oslo - NorwayTlf: +47 2201 0000 Fax: +47 2201 0001 tuba@tubarec.com www.tubarec.com 8

Sisters Jennifer and Jessie Clavin match their ability to blend a mix of freewheeling‘77 punk with vintage sunny Southern California melodic rock and roll; creating blindinglybright hooks and dark heartfelt lyrics about love, loss, and the crazy fun moments in between. That’sthe goal: the sugary and sour, repurposed by two aggressively harmonic musicians and songwriters.Their first single “Next Stop” epitomizes this movement-fun, raw, adventurous and free. Tossing youout onto the dance floor, hair mussed from make-outs, cigarette still dangling from your fingertips.Raised up deep in the San Fernando Valley, their suburban isolation nurtured the girls creativity,as they started making their own music at a young age. Sneaking into punk shows over the hill inHollywood, they grew up to become teenaged underground staples at all-ages Downtown DIY venue,The Smell. ”Me and Jen were punk kids who weren’t taught how to play instruments,” says Jessie. We taught ourselves how to play, out in the garage.” Eventually signing to Kill Rock Stars and PostPresent Medium, their all girl punk band Mika Miko drew international acclaim, landing slots ontours with No Age, Black Lips, and The Gossip. As a whole, the twelve tracks on Ride Your Heart reveal the many facets of Bleached’s music in adelicious vortex of playful harmonies, tangled guitars, and golden noise. Each song brings a newelement, while also imbibing the classic moods of bands as varied and iconic in nature as The Ramones,The Rolling Stones and Fleetwood Mac. From the syncopated backbeat and two-part chorusof “Dead In Your Head,” the rolling riffs and sparkling melodies of “Searching Through The Past” andthe pulsating energy and urgency of “Dreaming Without You” and “Outta My Mind,” Bleached takeyou on a sweeping emotional rollercoaster that churns and burns. Luke Lalonde would write and demo constantly on his laptop, at home and on tour:Toronto, Montreal, Midland, Australia, France, Germany… everywhere.Several songs were realized during the recording process in the studio. “We don’t want totell you about what we think we sound like,” says the band’s Mitch DeRossier. “We can tellyou that this record will sound different. These songs lived with us, toured with us,got drunk with us and made our ears ring. Now, we get to hit the road and start makingyour ears ring.”FORHÅND 19. It’s truly a band album.”Tracklist:01. Line Of Fire02. Suddenly03. So Clear04. Your Life Your Call05. Villain06. Walking Lightly07. Head First08. Baton09. Beginnings10. After All Is Said And DoneThe distinction is important in Junip’s case, whose evolution has been a long, strange trip, indeed. The group actually formed in 1998 in Gothenburg, Sweden, but Junip didn’t actually release its acclaimedfirst album, Fields, until 2010. That delay stemmed largely from the success of Gonzálezas a solo artist. The renowned singer-songwriter found international acceptance with his individualalbums, 2003’s Veneer and 2007’s In Our Nature, which went on to sell over a million albums worldwide;audiences were captivated by the stark combination of González’s uniquely haunting voice andsinuous acoustic guitar on hits like “Crosses”and “Down The Line,” and distinctive interpretations ofcovers like The Knife’s “Heartbeats.” They were startled and beguiled, then, by hearing González inJunip’s band context, and one with such a propulsive, experimental bent: sprawling away from thestark folk aesthetic of González’s solo efforts, Fields teemed with driving motorik rhythms, psychedelicatmosphere, and dense synth textures.Junip avoided the protracted evolution of Fields, however, and as a result resounds with immediacy. “With Junip, and this album in particular, it’s not the kindof stuff that ends up on my solo recordings,” González notes. After touring extensively in the wakeof Fields, Araya, González, Winterkorn found themselves gelling as a unit like never before, able toaccess uncharted new sounds and emotions with newfound fluidity. “We’d press ‘record’ when westarted jamming, and end up with a pretty complete song structure when we finished,” Gonzálezexplains.Tuba Records - Karl Johansgt. 6 - 0154 Oslo - NorwayTlf: +47 2201 0000 Fax: +47 2201 0001 tuba@tubarec.com www.tubarec.com 12
