WELCOMEED BUCZESKIE, EVENT MANAGERWelcome to the 22nd edition of the Carlisle ChryslerNationals! As always, this is YOUR show, and I’mhonored to have the opportunity to present it to you formy sixth year. Last year in this column, I told you of myconnection to Mopars since birth; coming home fromthe hospital in my parents’ 1966 Charger. The year beforethat, I included a picture of me with my high school ridefrom the ‘80s (a Sublime Dart) and my present-day toy, a’67 Belvedere with major suspension upgrades. The point is that this hobby is always changing andI’ve tried to follow those changes since the beginning. In my opinion, there is no wrong aspect of the Moparhobby, but it seems to cycle between stock and modified.Right now the trend is toward modified cars thatwere built to drive, but O.E. restorations are still verypopular, too. With money being in short supply comparedwith five years ago, more owners are finding itimpractical to own a car that needs to be hauled everywhere. This is a great hobby with a great variety of optionswhen it comes to building a Mopar, and there isno wrong answer. For those who want to drive theirclassic and be able to do it safely with today’s traffic, there are lots of options when it comes to brakes andsuspension — the two main areas that need to be upgraded.Hotchkis Sport Suspension offers one option, and it’s just about all bolt-on components, allowingthe owner to return it to stock if the mood ever strikes. To experience their products in action, head to thenorth side of the field and go for a FREE ride in one oftheir cars! One thing that hasn’t changed in the hobby is thelegendary status of Richard Petty. We are honored tohave The King at the Chrysler Nationals this year forthe first time ever. His appearance is courtesy of theNortheast Hemi Owners Association. He’s only here onSunday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., so be sure to make yourway to the stage for an autograph!ACC'S MOPAR MUSCLEIf you’re into all things Chrysler, you’ve come to the rightplace. From ’Cudas to Challengers, Polaras to RoadRunners, and Power Wagons to Imperials, it’s all here.Mopar or no car, as the saying goes.American muscle is by definition over the top in bothappearance and performance, and Chrysler built someof the most notorious examples around — with someof the most powerful engines ever to come out of Detroit.Win on Sunday, sell on Monday was never so true asit was for Mopar in the heyday of the muscle car. Those383-, 440- and Hemi-powered rockets cleaned up instreet races across this country, and they command bigdollars in the market today. In recent years, Chrysler has spearheaded the returnof the American muscle car into the new car market, andthe results have been spectacular. What’s not to loveabout the modern Challenger R/T and SRT8? They offerthe same aggressive look as the originals with modernreliability, economy, and top-level performance.ACC just got into a Dodge of our own. Ours is a 1963440 2-door post with an Indy Maxx 500-ci all-aluminumHemi and push-button TorqueFlite auto. Even the GMand Ford guys on our staff can’t deny its brute powerand cool factor — and even if they did, its 10-secondquarter-mile timeslips would shut them down.If all this resonates with you the same way it doeswith me, you owe it to yourself to check out AmericanCar Collector magazine. Each issue features in-depthmarket reports and profiles of Mopars that have recentlysold at auction. It’s the best way to keep track of themarket for cars like yours, or cars like that A12 440 Six-Pack Road Runner you’ve always wanted and are stilltrying to find. Check out the special introductory offercard in this directory. And above all, enjoy your time atthe Nationals this weekend!— Jim PickeringEditor, American Car CollectorContents4-10 ............Schedule and Highlights12 ........................Mopar Top Eliminator14 ........................................ SPECIAL GUESTSThe concept of television has existed for well over 100years in one form or another. What has remainedconstant through the years is that a hit TV program cando more to carry on the legend of its stars, cars and charactersthan anyone could have ever imagined. A primeexample of a TV program far outliving its expectations isDukes of Hazzard. It’s because of the demand, popularity and loveablenature of the show that the automotive worldand mainstream society embrace stars from Dukes atevents like the Carlisle Chrysler Nationals. That is whythis weekend’s guests, Ben Jones and Catherine Bach, join previous guests James Best (Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane),John Schneider (Bo Duke), Byron Cherry (CoyDuke) and the late Christopher Mayer (Vance Duke). The drawing power for the Dukes is such that in2011, during a year littered with poor weather at all10 Carlisle-based shows, John Schneider’s visit saw thebiggest one-day attendance spike in the history of theevent. So why do the Dukes keep coming to Carlisleand why do people keep coming to see them?“Sometimes the phenomenon amazes us,” notedDorothy Best, wife of James Best. With both beinghere in 2010, she continued, “I was told we’d see a bigturnout at Carlisle but we were truly surprised at everyonethat showed up.” Best concluded by noting, “Idon’t know if there is a definitive answer as to why theshow has been so successful over time, but it and fanslike those at Carlisle a few years ago have been verygood to us.”From a Carlisle standpoint, event manager Ed Buczeskiehas been responsible for booking five of the sixDukes stars. He continues to do so for a myriad of reasons, outlined in a recent conversation:Michael Garland – Why do you book Dukes’ stars?EB – Like many Mopar fans I literally grew up onthe Dukes. Watching that Charger every Friday nightwas partly responsible for my passion for Mopars. Itbrought the Charger into the public’s eye and it hasstood the test of time.RICHARD PETTYPRESENTED BY THENORTHEAST HEMI OWNERS ASSOCIATIONMeet this NASCAR Legend andseven-time Winston Cup Champion!Due to the Daytona NASCAR race on Saturday night of theCarlisle Chrysler Nationals, Petty is only able to appear onSunday and is scheduled to sign autographs from 11 a.m. to1 p.m. An autograph and/or photo opportunity will be freewith a paid admission to the event, but due to anticipatedhigh demand, a limited number will be possible. CarlisleEvents and representatives from Petty’s Garage will assurethat as many people as possible can meet “The King.”MG – What do you think is the draw?EB – A whole generation was raised on the Dukes. It’s not just Mopar people who like it, either. The showcrosses brands and is enjoyed by many non-car enthusiastsas well. It was a wholesome show and it was justfun to watch … and still is today.MG – How do you go about landing the guests?EB – Believe it or not, every Dukes cast member atthe show in the last five years was presented to me insome fashion; either by an agent, mutual friend or directly. The Dukes of Hazzard celebrities are always popularat the show and as the word spreads among thecast, each of them eventually find themselves here.MG – What are your thoughts for next year?EB – Ideas range from Tom Wopat to “The HazzardCounty Cops” to a full Dukes Reunion with all of the remainingcast members. It’s all a matter of budget andnot wanting to cause Dukes overload for our guests.CATHERINE BACH •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••Catherine Bach is famously knownfor her role on the long running CBSprogram the Dukes of Hazzard, due inpart to her eye catching looks, countrygirl charm and namesake DaisyDuke Shorts. IN LOVING MEMORYIt was just two years ago that I had even heard Eli’sname for the first time but his story struck a chord withme. During the 2010 Chrysler Nationals we were tryingto make it a weekend to remember for John Kozak whohad just lost his girlfriend to cancer and now he was battlingthe disease himself. Through John I learned aboutEli and his struggles with cancer since childhood. I alsolearned that Eli was from Connecticut so I reached out tothe one person I knew who lived in the same state andwould be more than willing to help. That person wasRalph Barbagallo.Together a plan was quickly hatched to get ourhands on Eli’s 1966 Dart convertible and do our ownversion of theTV show Overhaulin’.We ralliedmembersof Mopars inMotion andMopar Rebellionbut we stillneeded a placeto do the work.I immediatelythought of thetwo people inNew England with the biggest hearts in the hobbyand by sheer luck they also happen to have one ofthe best-equipped shops and skills of any hobbyists Iknow. Within less than 30 minutes after I sent an emailI got a call back from Gary Beineke saying that he hadtalked to his wife, Pam, and they only had one question;how soon can you get the car to us?From there it was on. Calls were made for donationsand parts. Within days we literally had parts coming tous from all across the country. Nobody asked, “What’sin it for me?” Instead, we typically were asked, “Whatdo you need?” We weren’t dealing with an unlimitedbudget and as parts were arriving we knew we had adeadline. The car was delivered to the Beinekes on July25 and the goal was to have the car done by September19 so the car could be presented to Eli at a Moparshow at Artioli Dodge in CT.While there was no TV drama and the deadline wasa self-imposed goal, we were racing against the clockbecause nobody knew just how much time Eli had leftand we all wanted him to have as much time as possibleto enjoy the car. Lots of people worked on the carin one capacity or another but Gary and Pam put theirprojects on hold and did the lion’s share of the work…all without a single complaint. Like I said, there was noTV drama.Parts were still arriving and work was still beingdone right up until the day before the reveal. On Sun-ELIJAH STANLEY ABEL AULTJULY 4, 1981 - OCTOBER 6, 2011day, September 19, Eli’s Dart Charger was sitting in theshowroom of Artioli Dodge under a cover with pillowsstrategically placed to disguise the final shape. A fewhours before the cover was pulled off I finally met Elifor the first time. He was very open about his conditionand after that first meeting I felt like I had known himfor years. As soon as the cover was pulled from the fresh DartCharger, Eli hopped in and drove out of the showroom. His smile more than made up for his lack of words. Theentire crowd was choked up and just watched as Elihit the open road for the first time. He returned a shorttime later, still grinning from ear to ear. The emotionsflooded backin as Eli wentaround givinghugs to everyoneinvolvedwith the project.Fast forwardto the 2011Chrysler NationalswhereEli’s Dart wasfeatured inBuilding T and Eli himself was treated like a celebrityall weekend. Always thinking of others first, when hebecame exhausted each day he would actually call meto ask if it was okay for him to go back to his hotel andget some rest. By Sunday he was visibly exhausted buthe still wanted to help load his car on the trailer andhelp his friends load theirs for the trip home.Sadly, that was the last time I got to see Eli. We keptin touch through phone calls, email and Facebook. On the morning of October 6 my cell phone rang andthe call was coming from Ralph. I instantly knew whyhe was calling. I briefly thought about letting it go tovoicemail but I was so sure of the reason for his callthat it was pointless.I think part of the reason why I debated about answeringthat call was because I was headed to OceanCity, MD for their Endless Summer car show and didn’twant to ruin my weekend with the bad news. As soonas I arrive in Ocean City I unloaded my Belvedere andbegan to cruise the beach knowing that’s exactly whatEli would’ve wanted to do.I look at everything a little differently these daysthanks to Eli. He was definitely a fighter and I neverheard him complain about his situation nor bring anyoneelse down because of it. I want to give my sincerestgratitude to everyone who was involved with Eli’sDart Charger. We miss you, buddy. The show won’t bethe same without you.18 2012 CARLISLE CHRYSLER NATIONALS CarlisleEvents.com

MOD TOP DISPLAYBUILDING YEvery car enthusiast thinks his or her favorite brand ofcar is the best, fastest, rarest, most valuable, etc. All ofthat is debatable and will likely never be resolved. However, when it comes to wild graphics and colors mostfolks agree that Chrysler vehicles win that battle handsdown! With colors like Plum Crazy, Panther Pink, CuriousYellow, Sublime and Lemon Twist as well as graphicslike the ’71 ‘Cuda billboard, AAR strobe stripe and 340Wedge decals, the other brands can just throw in thetowel now.As wild as all of those were, the floral interiors andtops, better known as Mod Tops, were probably thepinnacle in excess — even for Chrysler Corporation.Even in the psychedelic era of ’69 and ’70, these patternsproved to be too much, and as a result, Mod Topcars are very rare today. Even though they were availableon everything from six-cylinder A-Bodies to theHemi ’Cuda owned by Steven Juliano, very few werebought back in the day and even fewer still exist. This display of factory Mod Top cars ranges froma totally unrestored ’69 Barracuda that was literallydragged out of the woods to a well-preserved Survivorand several beautifully restored examples. We arealso pleased to have at least one of each body style (A,B & E) on display this weekend. This gathering was made possible by the efforts ofJulie Moore and Dave Goodwin of the Mod Top Registry. For more information on Mod Top Mopars, pleasevisit http://www.mooresmopars.com/modregistryhtml.To see these cars in person, be sure to stop byBuilding Y for one of the most unusual exhibits we’veever featured at the Chrysler Nationals!1969 PLYMOUTH BARRACUDAAaron Gobble1969 PLYMOUTH BARRACUDADave Goodwin1969 DODGE DART SWINGERRich Bellerby1969 PLYMOUTH BARRACUDADuane & Tammie Isenberger1969 PLYMOUTH BARRACUDADavid Elder1970 PLYMOUTH ’CUDAGlen Keller1969 PLYMOUTH BARRACUDAJulie Moore22 2012 CARLISLE CHRYSLER NATIONALS CarlisleEvents.com

RETRO DEALERSHIPWe all know that Chrysler kept performance alive a lot longer than theother manufacturers by continuing the full line of performance offeringsthrough 1971. Although horsepower ratings and compression weredown a little, you could still buy everything from the 340 to the 440+6.This year we are pleased to present some of the rarest and coolestMopars made in ’72. Not many people restore 318 cars, but Beeney Motorshas what are arguably the nicest ’72 Scamp and Satellite Sebring Plus onthe planet. How about not one, but two ’72 Chargers with a 440, 4-speedand a Dana 60? Oh, and one of them is a factory sunroof car — in black —and it’s a Survivor! If stock isn’t enough for you, some of the cars have beenhopped up a little — you know, for those occasional trips to the track ormaybe just to remind the guys on Saturday night that Mopars still rule thestreet! Maybe you’re still not convinced and feel that even the baddeststreet car is still too tame. To satisfythose performance freaks, HerbMcCandless and his ’72 Demon willmake an appearance this weekendat Beeney Motors! VENDOR FEATURE: HERB’S PARTSMopar Madness has reached unmatchedlevels both at Carlisle and within the collectorcar hobby. With this weekend’s event, there are a few things you can do that makebeing a fan of the Mopar brand very easy. Meetcelebrities — check; sit in on seminars led by industryprofessionals — check; be part of a showfieldthat hosts a few thousand of Detroit’s best— check; and shop for parts and accessories tohelp with either the upkeep or restoration of your prizedride — check! As the annual event goes, the world’s largest all-Mopar swap meet is a popular destination for enthusiasts, and one of its popular vendors is Herb Reynoldsof Delaware and the purveyor of Herb’s Auto Parts.Herb and his parts have been coming to the ChryslerNationals since its inception in 1991 and can be foundthis weekend in Row IA, Spaces 5-13 (same row as theGuest Services building). There are many great vendors here this weekendand Herb’s Parts is one of them, but what broughtHerb here in the first place and what keeps him comingback? “I’ve been at this event since day one and atCarlisle for a few years before that,” said Herb from hisalways-busy office. “Carlisle is well known for all of itsshows, not only the size and reach of them all, but theway each of them are so well-presented. What Carlisledoes works, and the people that have been coming toCarlisle have been very good to us over the years.”Might it be the parts themselves that draw the interestof those shopping the swap meet at Carlisle?Based on his web site promotion alone, it’s clear to seethat Herb’s Parts are something special. According towww.herbsparts.com, “Herb’s Parts has been in businessfor more than 30 years, specializing in 1963–1974Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge parts and accessories. Our goal is to continually expand the inventory forthese cars and develop parts availability for others, along with keeping a large stock of quality parts at affordableprices on hand and shipping on the day theorder is placed. We attend to each customer quickly, answering questions and fulfilling restoration needsfor your car. Herb’s Parts is not just a business, we lovecars, just like you do!”All of that sounds good on paper (or online), butHerb’s Parts not only talks the talk, they walk the walk. With a great array of A-, B-, C- and E-Body parts as wellas 2006–12 models and even truck accessories, Herb’sParts believes that a great mix of supplies helps keepthe people coming.“Not only do people come see us in droves at Carlisle,we see a lot of Web traffic, too. I always encouragesomeone who interested in a part to pre-order, but Ido advise at least two weeks’ notice,” Herb said. “In addition,if someone wants to buy on-site from us, they’llsee great show specials and, better yet, will save onshipping costs.”One of the more popular aspects of what Herb’sParts does is their wall of carpet. This weekend, theyhave 100 sets of carpet and want you to stop by tosee what works best for you. Herb continued by sayingthat, “The Carlisle Chrysler Nationals has becomeour biggest show, and we believe what makes us successfulis not only our wide variety of parts, but ourfriendly customer service. We always have a smile onour faces. In fact, I want everyone to know that if theyorder online, there is a great chance that I’m smilingwhen I review their Web order.”At some point this weekend, whether you’re actuallybuying something, or you simply want to stop byand say hello, be sure to swing by to see Herb!34 2012 CARLISLE CHRYSLER NATIONALS CarlisleEvents.com

A DRIVE IN TO OUR LIFE“A Drive In To Our Life” is an essay written by local Big SpringHigh School student Shannon Hamblin. Her honors Englishclass teacher, Ms. Courtney Moore, shared it with CarlisleEvents due to its grassroots automotive theme, and in turn, the staff was so moved that they invited Shannon and herfather to attend the event as celebrity guests and gave hera complimentary showfield registration so that she may beable to show her car next year.My family is different from most. This is mostly becauseof my crazy father. Most dads like to playgolf or watch football; mine would rather wash anddetail one of his classic cars. My dad’s hobby — excuseme, obsession — is cars. Actually, it’s really anythingthat has a motor. We have 12 cars (nine of them beingclassic), three tractors/ lawn mowers, one dirt bike, two motorcycles and two four-wheelers. I am sure youare thinking, “Oh, there must be a lot of people in yourfamily.” Wrong. It is me, my little brother and my dad.My dad is the only one who can drive in my family! Youknow your dad is obsessed with cars when every April13th he reminds you to go wish his ’79 Dodge PowerWagon (his first vehicle he bought new) a happy birthday.I refuse. Did I mention that the car I road homefrom the hospital in when I was born was a 1970 AAR’Cuda. My mom was awfully scared to put her littlebaby into something so powerful.Sometimes I think over and over about how big of anut my dad is, but I don’t know what our family wouldbe like without our cars. Each of the classic cars hasa story to go along with it. It might sound like I amcomplaining about my dad having these cars, but ifmy dad sold them, I would be very upset. This is nota midlife crisis thing where my dad bought a bunchof cars; he has worked throughout his whole life forthem. Ever since he was a kid, he has loved cars. Hisfirst car was a 1969 Road Runner that he worked forand paid for all by himself. In high school, he would goto a dead-end street nearby and have burnout competitionswith his buddies. My dad claims he always won.My dad and mom were high school sweethearts. After they got out of school, they went to a junkyardone day and found a 1974 Dart Sport. My dad told mymom he would restore it for her, and my dad knewmom was a keeper when she said, “No you won’t, Iwill help you”. My mom and dad spent the next twoyears restoring the car. It looked like new when theywere all done. Unfortunately, this part does not havesuch a happy ending. In 2005 a guy ran a stop sign andcrashed into the driver’s side of my mom’s car. She wasin the very car she and my dad restored. My mom didnot recover from the accident. This was a very tragicmoment in my family’s life.A few years later, my dad found a 1967 Dart convertibleout in California. He bought it. It was not inthe greatest shape, but my dad bought it like that onpurpose. His plan was to give me the car, but we couldrestore it together first, in memory of my mom. I wasall for it. We are still restoring it now. It is being sentout to get paint this fall, right before I get my license.I told my dad I was going to do some burnouts in theschool parking lot. He laughed. It was funny, becauseI was not kidding.Practically my dad’s whole life and my whole life, our family gets very excited for one trip we take everyyear. This is our trip to Carlisle, PA, for the CarlisleAll Chrysler Nationals in July. We go every year. Mostteenage girls would never step foot in there, but I getso excited every year for it. My favorite part was seeingMiss Carlisle. I got my picture with her every year. I toldmy mom I will be Miss Carlisle when I am old enough. Iam not sure if I will fulfill my childhood dream, but wewill see! My dad would bring down one or two of hiscars every year, and would always place very well. In2002, we even had our best show car, our 1972 DodgeCharger in the Invitational Building. It was really cool.In 2003 we also had the Charger along with our 1973’Cuda in the Show Field. They both placed first. Our trip to Carlisle was also a time to see very closefriends of ours who we only get to see once a year. When we come down, after the show it was so nice justto take the back roads of Carlisle to our hotel. Pennsylvaniais beautiful, and my dad and I really like thisarea. We love it so much, we moved here! We movedto Carlisle from Buffalo, NY, in 2008. I was not so happyat first; just because it was hard to leave a place I livedmy whole life. Now I think moving was the best thingthat’s ever happened to me. I love this area, and it isvery convenient to live only eight miles away from theCarlisle Fairgrounds, my dad’s home away from home. Some people will always know him as the “Crazy CarGuy,” but I know my dad takes pride in his cars. He restoresclassic cars for himself and other people, alongwith a car dealership, so luckily he knows what to doexactly if something needs fixed. It’s also very handyfor me that I will never have to pay for a mechanic! Allin all, I am kind of attached to my dad’s obsession. The owner of Olivia’s Corner wasalso moved by Shannon’s story andhas provided her with a free manicure, pedicure and special makeupfor her celebrity guest appearance.www.OliviasCorner.com717-756-2600BRING THIS COUPON AND RECEIVE25% OFFYOUR NEXT REGULAR PRICE SERVICEElectrolysis, Microcurrent, Photorejuvenation(LED Therapy), Acrylics/Gels/Shellac, Microdermabrasion,Cellulite Treatments, Manicures, Pedicures, Spray Tanning,Waxing and Bridal and Spa Parties36 2012 CARLISLE CHRYSLER NATIONALS CarlisleEvents.com

It all began when Rooseveltpromised Churchill wartimeequipment under the Lend Leaseprogram in 1941.
