INSTALLATIONSPEEDI-SLEEVE ®INSTALLATIONFrom scored to restored in a few minutesAlthough installation is simple, it should be done carefullyto achieve the best results. Before starting, the seal seating on the shaft shouldbe carefully cleaned and any burrs or rough spots shouldbe filed down and polished. Deep wear grooves, scratches or very rough surfaces should be treated with asuitable metallic powder epoxy filler. The sleeve must bepositioned on the shaft before the filler has hardened. It should also be noted that although Speedi-Sleevescan be easily installed within minutes on most shafts, they should not be placed over splines or keyways etc.on the shaft. As the thin-walled sleeve has an interferencefit, any disturbances on the shaft surface may create asimilar pattern on the sleeve surface and the seal willleak.CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZETo determine the appropriate sleeve size it is firstnecessary to clean the shaft carefully. The diameter of anundamaged section of the seal counterface should thenbe measured in at least three different planes. Thearithmetical mean of these measurements is used tochoose a SPEEDI-SLEEVE ® . If the value lies within thepermissible range shown in the product table for theshaft diameter (d a ) then the SPEEDI-SLEEVE ® will havean adequately tight fit on the shaft. The sleeve cannotturn on the shaft and no adhesive is required. If no suitable sleeve is listed in the product table thenit will be necessary to rework the shaft to an appropriatedimension. This will also mean that a new size of sealwill be required. If production quantities are viable, CRwill also make tailored sleeves.PROCEDURE123The final position of the sleeve on the shaft shouldbe determined and marked. The sleeve should coverthe wear tracks of the old seal and not just left flushwith the shaft end.Push the sleeve on to the shaft with the flanged endfirst. The mounting tool supplied with the sleeve isthen pushed on to the sleeve. If the tool is not longenough a length of pipe of tubing with square, deburred ends can be used instead.Apply light mallet blows centrally to the mountingtool until the sleeve has been driven up to its finalposition. Be careful not to damage the outsidediameter of the sleeve.8
