It obviously pays to involve a sealing expert,not only to solve existing problems, but to proposesealing arrangements that are up to the job.CONVEYOR SYSTEM OVER-RUNNING CLUTCHThe clutches are used to control the rollers of heavy-dutyconveyors used to deliver gypsum wall board sheets todrying ovens during the production process.Shaft scoring occurred from lack of lubricant coupledwith contamination including dust and gypsum fibres.The damaged shafts and lubricant leakage caused thelines to be shut down with resultant loss of production aswell as high maintenance costs.The sealing system was redesigned and a SPEEDI-SLEEVE ® used to repair the scored shaft without any remetallisingor reworking. The original braided packingwas replaced by a CR "LongLife" radial shaft seal and aV-ring was added to prevent contaminants from reachingthe radial shaft seal. The use of this redesigned sealingsystem has significantly reduced downtime and the needfor maintenance.Again the answer was to redesign the sealingarrangement. A SPEEDI-SLEEVE ® was incorporated toprotect the shaft from wear and the labyrinth wasreplaced by a combination of a radial shaft seal with asingle lip (CRWH design) and a V-ring seal. Both sealsare made of the LongLife rubber to cope with theelevated temperatures. Bearing failures were reduced sothat downtime was cut and repair work minimised.AMUSEMENT PARKMONORAIL TRANSPORTATIONLubricant was leaking from the monorail gearbox as thetrain travelled overhead through the park. As thelubricant frequently fell on park visitors, the leakage wascosting park management considerable sums for cleaningclothing.The original seal was of leather and ran on a highlypolished shaft. The seal design unfortunately allowedlubricant to escape.PAPERMAKING MACHINEThe conditions in a paper mill are not the easiest asmoisture content and dust levels are high and operatingtemperatures are often rather high.The original design featured labyrinth seals. Theseexcluded coarse particulate contamination, but were onlypartially successful in excluding water and airborne dust.Bearing failure was common and resulted in unacceptablelevels of downtime.6
