Managing login permissionsManaging users and passwordsYou must provide a username and password when you perform any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> following actions:● When you access <strong>the</strong> CLI. For more information, see Accessing <strong>the</strong> CLI on page 27.●When you connect to <strong>the</strong> console port modem with dialup PPP. For more information, seeAccessing CLI via modem on page 30.● When you open <strong>Avaya</strong> <strong>G350</strong> Manager.When you use <strong>Avaya</strong> <strong>G350</strong> Manager or <strong>the</strong> CLI, your username determines your privilege level.The commands that are available to you during <strong>the</strong> session depend on your privilege level.If your network has a RADIUS server, you can use RADIUS au<strong>the</strong>ntication instead <strong>of</strong> ausername and password. A RADIUS server provides centralized au<strong>the</strong>ntication service formany devices on a network. For more information, see RADIUS au<strong>the</strong>ntication on page 40.Privilege levelWhen you start to use <strong>Avaya</strong> <strong>G350</strong> Manager or <strong>the</strong> CLI, you must enter a username. Theusername that you enter sets your privilege level. The commands that are available to youduring <strong>the</strong> session depend on your privilege level. If you use RADIUS au<strong>the</strong>ntication, <strong>the</strong>RADIUS server sets your privilege level.The <strong>G350</strong> provides <strong>the</strong> following three privilege levels:● Read-only — You can use Read-only privilege level to view configuration parameters.●Read-write — You can use Read-write privilege level to view and change all configurationparameters except those related to security. For example, you cannot change a passwordwith Read-write privilege level.● Admin — You can use Admin privilege level to view and change all configurationparameters, including parameters related to security. Use Admin privilege level only whenyou need to change configuration that is related to security, such as adding new useraccounts and setting <strong>the</strong> device policy manager source.The default username has Admin privilege level. For security reasons, <strong>the</strong> networkadministrator usually changes <strong>the</strong> password <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> default username. For more informationabout privilege levels, see <strong>Avaya</strong> <strong>G350</strong> <strong>Media</strong> <strong>Gateway</strong> CLI Reference, 555-245-202.Configuring usernamesTo create a username, use <strong>the</strong> username command. To remove a username, use <strong>the</strong> nousername command. To change <strong>the</strong> password or <strong>the</strong> privilege level for a username, remove<strong>the</strong> username and add it again. You need an Admin privilege level to use <strong>the</strong> username and nousername commands.Issue 3 January 2005 37
