Configuring SNMPThere are several ways that the SNMP manager and the agent communicate. The managercan:●●●Retrieve a value – a get action. The SNMP manager requests information from the agent, such as the number of userslogged on to the agent device or the status of a critical process on that device. The agentgets the value of the requested Management Information Base (MIB) variable and sendsthe value back to the manager.Retrieve the value immediately after the variable you name — a get-next action. The SNMP manager retrieves different instances of MIB variables. The SNMP managertakes the variable you name and then uses a sequential search to find the desiredvariable.Retrieve a number of values — a get-bulk action. The get-bulk operation retrieves the specified number of instances of the requested MIBvariable. This minimizes the number of protocol exchanges required to retrieve a largeamount of data.Note:Note: For●●Note:Get-bulk is not supported in SNMPv1.Change a configuration on the agent — a set action. The SNMP manager requests the agent to change the value of the MIB variable. Forexample, you can run a script or an application on a remote device with a set action. An agent can send an unsolicited message to the manager at any time if a significant, predetermined event takes place on the agent. This message is called a notification. When a notification condition occurs, the SNMP agent sends an SNMP notification to thedevice specified as the trap receiver or trap host. The SNMP Administrator configures thetrap host, usually the SNMP management station, to perform the action needed when atrap is detected.Note:a list of traps and MIBS, see Traps and MIBs on page 323.SNMP versionsThere are currently three versions of SNMP:●●●SNMPv1SNMPv2cSNMPv3The Avaya G350 Media Gateway supports all three of these versions. The implementation ofSNMPv3 on the G350 is backwards compatible. An agent that supports SNMPv3 will alsosupport SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c.120 Administration of the Avaya G350 Media Gateway
