COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. JOSEPH2009 OUTLOOKAfter a solid 2008 campaign, the Lions’ softball team looks to reachnew heights this year. Combining both strong offensive and pitchingperformances, the Lions were able to finish with an overall record of17-23, but more importantly a 10-6 HCAC record, to earn a berthin the HCAC Tournament. The Mount would go on to a 2-2record in the tournament, ultimately losing a 13-inning heartbreakerto eventual HCAC Tournament champion Defiance College, eliminating them from the tournament. The team hopes to buildupon last year’s progress and go deeper into the post season thisspring.“Our goals our simple,’’ explains Head Coach Beth Goderwis.“First we want to win the Conference. We want to have a strongseason and have more than 20 wins and hopefully get to to theNCAA tournament for the first time since 2003.”Goderwis and the Lions know however, that the HCAC alwaysproves to be a tough challenge. She feels that Defiance College,Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Bluffton University willonce again field very competitive teams in 2009. With the steadysuccess of the program the team she also believes that they havewhat it takes to be one of the top three teams in the conference this8Mount pitcher Katie Cohill in action against Bluffton last season.season. Rose-Hulman was selected as the favorite to win the 2009HCAC softball title in a vote during the preseason of the conferencecoaches. Defiance and Bluffton were next in the poll, while theLions came in sixth. To secure their place among the elite teams in the conference theLions have worked very hard addressing many of the weaknessesthat have held them back in the past.“We really hope to improve on our hitting,’’ Goderwis says.“We left a lot of runners in scoring position last year and we need tocapitalize on those opportunities and score those runner. “We alsoneed to cut down our errors in some key positions. We had far toomany errors.”In 40 games played the Lions committed 78 errors to theiropponents 63 miscues while leaving 263 runners on base. Theysuffered six, one-run losses, three, two-run losses and were shutoutfour times in 2008.The team will have a strong core returning consisting of somevery talented athletes.“We have several players that we hope step up and have a hugeimpact on our season,” says Goderwis. “Our three pitchers (KatieCohill, Katie Lawrence and Casey Brookbank), all sophomores, now have a season under their belts so they should be morepolished. I really think that all four of our seniors (Megan Helvey,Kristina Dennett, Jessica Meinking, and Randi Yaeger) will make ahuge impact on the season also. We have only one junior on theteam, outfielder Casey Waldman, and she will be a key player, too,for us in the outfield.”Cohill went 6-5 on the season with a 2.47 ERA and added foursaves while Brookbank recorded a 7-5 mark with a 2.69 ERA.Lawrence, who pitched in 16 games, had a team-best 40 strikeouts.Cohill and Brookbank combined to go 10-2 in HCAC play lastspring.Yaeger, at catcher, Helvey at first base, Meinking in the outfield, and Dennett at shortstop all figure to start this season for the Lions.Last year’s leading hitter, Megan McCullough, who capturedAll-HCAC honors, also returns and is expected to hold down herstarting spot at second base. The Mount had three players graduatein the spring - All-HCAC honoree first baseman Katie Cammerer, outfielder Ashleigh Stallkamp, who had team-leading totals lastseason of eight home runs and 27 RBI, and pitcher Tessa Diersing.Five others that played in 2008 will not return this season. The Lions hope to pair their strong returning group, with othersback from last season’s team, and two first-year players. The firstyearplayers to the program are transfer Haley Shinkle and freshmanKathleen Horn. Goderwis expects both may have an immediateimpact - Horn at an open third base spot and Hinkle in the outfield. Both will also add to the Lions’ depth when not in the startingline-up.“I think our starting lineup is going to be strong,’’ Goderwisstates. “We will probably only be starting one or two first-yearplayers and the rest will be returners. I think with some adjusting toour batting line-up we should be stronger top to bottom. We stilldo not have the speed that I would like but we hope to make up forthat with more hit-and-runs and delayed steals.“We are not as deep this year on the bench because we only have14 players, but I think we will have some players there that will beable to step up in key situations and DH or pinch run.”Provided the team stays healthy, the entire squad looks to haveenough talented and competitive athletes at every position, alongwith a stable bench, to provide turn in a good season of results.Overall, the Lions appear poised to have a sound season and a makea genuine run at the postseason.
