In late 1970s the Head Office ofGeodesy and Cartography initiated a project aiming at the preparationof such a gazetteer in Poland. It was published in 1991. The ‘Nazwygeograficzne Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej’ (Geographical names of theRepublic of Poland) contained a selection of 30,000 place namesbased on a 1:500,000-scale map. The names were standardized by theKomisja Ustalania Nazw Miejscowości i Obiektów Fizjograficznych(Commission for Establishing Names of Localities and PhysiographicObjects).Owing to the procedure of the Commission’s activities, only asmall number of Polish geographic names are standardized so far.Certain standardization activities are carried out by geographers,surveyors and cartographers during the map editing process. Also, anumber of linguistic monographs on different kinds of geographicnames appeared in print.It is estimated that about 1 million names are yet to bestandardized. These are especially names of hamlets, streams, hills,parts of lakes and the like. Small part of these names can be found inthe already existing databases.In the early 1970s the Komisja Standaryzacji NazwGeograficznych poza Granicami Polski (Commission forStandardization of Geographical Names Outside Poland) wasestablished. It is responsible for the collection and standardization offoreign geographic names. It prepared a 4-volume ‘Polskie nazwygeograficzne świata’ (Polish Geographic Names of Foreign Areas)(1994–96) and also several other publications: ‘The Polish ToponymicGuidelines’ (1993), ‘Nazwy państw świata, ich stolic i mieszkańców’(Names of countries, their capitals and inhabitants) (1997), ‘Słownik26
