From the Pastor’s Desk… I am willing to bet that as we look back to the events of this past weekthe highlight of our Centennial Celebration may well be our Folk and YOUth Group production of LesMiserables. In so many ways it epitomizes what a parish is all about. In the message of ourStewardship Renewal, God calls on all of us to use our time, talent and treasure to bring out our bestand bring our best to the world in which we live. That is what exactly happened when the many giftsand talents united, young and the young at heart, singers, dancers, artists, sewers, technicians, directors and the like to produce an extravaganza to delight the audiences that packed our auditoriumfor five performances.Originating as an outgrowth of our Folk Group, their director Rob Drummond united with theprofessional theater skills of Kevin Harrington to bring about a team of hundreds of our parishioners.Their dedication and persistence showcased the best of our young people weaving scenes and lyrics ofa musical drama to move the hearts of their audiences and challenge the integrity of their consciences. All this was accomplished with mutual cooperation and respect for each others abilities andcontribution. What more can be said than that which was shouted at performance after performance:BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!BRAVO to our Musical Directors, Alex Harrington & Ann Marie Lynch, Assistants to the Director KimNiederberger, Maureen Schwartz & Marty Severino; Stage Managers, MaryAnn & Dawn Lynch,Costumes, Barbara Kirby, Eileen Ginley; Scenic Construction & Artist respectively Bernie Lynch &Trudy Santoemma; Moderator, Deacon Rich LaRossa, Assistant Choreographer Geralyn Becker,Lighting Design, Matthew Ezzo; Sound, Britney Roderick & Matt Niederberger; Lighting, Matthew Ezzo& Program Design Elise Shapiro.BRAVO to the cast of our young people who tirelessly gave the very best of themselves so thatothers could hear the message, enjoy their talents and resonated with score and lyrics.BRAVO to our parishioners and friends who supported these efforts and benefited from thisproduction as well as to their parents and siblings who were always there to encourage them to givetheir very best.BRAVO to the many others mentioned in the program who gave unselfishness of themselves sothat we all could be enriched by Les Miserables and another powerful opportunity to experience theface of God! Father Bill100 Years of Faith, Love and FriendshipTHIRTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEToday is the feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica inRome, the diocesan church of our Holy Father. The originaldedication actually took place on November 9, 325 AD and wasvery significant to the Church of the time. It meant that peoplecould worship Jesus in the open; that they could practiceChristianity without fear of death. Look at how many years havepassed since that dedication! The Basilica has undergonerenovations and rebuilding over the years, but it has endured.Obviously, it had to be built on a great foundation in order to havelasted for so long. So too the Church itself had to be built on a solid foundation – that of ChristHimself. This Lateran Basilica, this Cathedral in Rome, can be considered a temple, since itenshrines the Eucharist. The theme of the temple winds through all of the readings today. From Ezekiel’s vision of waterflowing from the temple and Paul’s description of a Christian as the temple of God, to Jesusspeaking about the temple of his own Body, we can see a connect ion. It is the living temple, theChurch, which remains an authentic witness to the good news of salvation and to the presence ofGod. As we commemorate this feast let us thank God for the freedom to worship Him so openlyand celebrate Christ as our foundation.-Sr. RuthanneSaint Raymond R. C. ChurchPage 2

Centennial NewsCentennial FlashbackConnie McDougal submitted a lovely piece on the Crossing Guards who have served ourchildren so diligently for so long.“Donna has been a crossing guard at St. Raymond’s for 18 years. She lives in Oceanside withher husband of 34 years and has 2 children. Many have met her at her post on the corner ofAtlantic and Carman Avenues. She says that the best part of her job is listening to the stories thechildren tell her. They are always happy to see her and tell her the things that are going on intheir lives like getting a new puppy or going to Disney World! Down the road on the corner ofAtlantic and Grant Avenue is Frances Doner, known as Frankie. Frankie was born in Ireland, butnow resides in Oceanside. She was assigned as a St. Raymond crossing guard about two yearsago. On the corner of Scranton and Carman is a relatively new crossing guard by the name ofChristine McDonald. She replaced Bette Brown who retired. Christine grew up in RockvilleCentre but now lives in Malverne with her husband. It is very evident that these ladies are patientand are incredibly kind to our children! Others over the years who have served us are Sue, at therailroad tracks, Marge Loliscio, on Grant and Atlantic and Mrs. Smith. No story about our guardsis complete without mentioning our Sunday Angel, Kathleen who crosses parishioners aftermasses each Sunday. Kathleen was born in Ireland, moved to Texas, and eventually settled inNew York. She is now living in Freeport. We owe our Crossing guards a hearty thank you forsafely crossing generations of St. Raymond parish children and their parents for many years”Centennial Christmas OrnamentsAt all masses over the weekends of November 29/30 and December 6/7, Centennial Christmasornaments will be on sale at the doors of the church. Most recently heparticipated in a marathon (USMC) in Washington, DC.In order to do so well in those races, Oliver had to makehealthy choices to eat right, get proper rest, and exerciseon a regular basis. They are the things the School Familywould like to imitate this week. We are beginning with ourown “mini-marathon” – actually, a walk around the block(Grant to Scranton to Carman to Atlantic)! Youngstudents w ill be paired with older ones to insure a safewalk. Hopefully students will be able to find some folks tosponsor the walk and increase the funds that Oliver hasalready raised. Topics relating to exercise and diet will bediscussed at all age levels and only healthy snacks will beavailable in the cafeteria at lunchtime. ALL SOULS DAYThe souls of the just arein the hands of God.”That’s the first line fromour scriptures today andit is so reassuring. Ialways have liked thefact that All Saints Day(commemorating those who are already inheaven) and all Souls Day (commemorating thedead who are on their way to heaven) arecelebrated back-to-back. I’m not sure where myloved ones who have already left this life are,but I trust with certain hope that they are inGod’s hands. And what better place to be?In the gospel Jesus says that He has comedown from heaven and will not lose any of thoseentrusted to Him – those He came to save –which is all of us! And He will raise us up on thelast day. Jesus has become the visiblemanifestation of God’s loving hand which holdsthe faithful securely in this life and will not let usgo in the next.I know that some people are uncomfortable withthe idea of Purgatory but it gives me greatcomfort. To purge means to purify, to get rid ofwhatever is undesirable. That’s what I believePurgatory is – a “place” where we can bepurified from the remains of our sinfulness – andwho of us is sinless? When I think of Purgatory,I recall my Mother telling us “Wash your handsbefore coming to the dinner table.” The dinnerwas ready for us, waiting, and we were assuredthat we would get it. But first, we had to becleaned up, to get rid of the dirt (germs, myMother said), so that we could truly enjoy themeal. So my image of Purgatory is God’s handsgently and lovingly scrubbing me clean.— Dcacon BobSaint Raymond R. C. ChurchPage 14

Stewards ofGod's GiftsOur Community’s ReflectionDuring the last few weeks, we were invited to reflect upon God’s gifts and tocelebrate God’s generosity in our lives. Yes, truly, we have been gifted by God!In Jesus’ parable of the sower and the seed (Luke 8: 4-15), we are told that the seed thatbears fruit is from the seed that fell on rich soil. Our God-given gifts that arecultivated and developed are just like the fruit—to be shared with others.During this part of our stewardship renewal process, we are invited to decidehow and where to use our gifts from God. In particular, we focus on our gifts oftime and talent. We do this with gracious, generous and good hearts. Our giftsare meant to be given away!Your ResponseThe commitment you make gives witness to your priorities and considers yourcurrent circumstances. It involves how and where you share your gifts at home,in the workplace, in the community and at church.Commitment WeekendThe fact that you have come this far on the journey in our stewardshiprenewal is already a sign of your commitment. You are a steward of God’sgifts! How are you currently sharing your God-given gifts of time and talent at home, inthe workplace, in the community and in the church? What plan do you have to take the next step to make or renew a commitment tosharing your gifts of time and talent during this year’sstewardship renewal?DIOCESE OF ROCKVILLE CENTRESaint Raymond R.
