If it is to be trusted,the first English version (which also was the first edition of Gras’s work according toArmana Prouvençau, 1897, p. 15) was published in New York, by Appleton and Co.,in March 1896. - XVII, 300 p. - in-8°. It was followed by a London edition, byHeinemann, in August 1896. - XVI, 264 p. - grand in-12. W. E. Gladstone’s letter tothe editor, in which he gave his favourable opinion of the novel, immediately broughtforth a second London edition, with a Publisher’s Note and a Correspondence addedto the original introduction by Thomas A. Janvier. No trace has been found of theseeditions (with corresponding dates and pages) in the British Museum and BritishLibrary catalogues, The United States Catalog, or in D. C. Haskell. When giving thepresent entry, A. V. Roche (p. 3, op. cit.) adds the following note : “The work waspublished in London the following year. There are two letters addressed to the authorby the Hon. William Ewart Gladstone in the ‘Publisher’s Note’ . This translation ‘hasbeen made directly from the Provençal manuscript, under the author’s supervision andthe benefit of his advice...
