Parent drop-ins can supportchess club by watching and listening quietly whileallowing the assigned parental volunteers to goabout their business. A "f1y-on-the-wall" approachis well advised to allow students to practicetheir martial art of the mind on their own andto permit the smooth functioning of staff and volunteers.Parents by modeling quiet support andattention best support their children as they learnto extend their attention span and respect themental space of their opponent by practicing quietdeliberation. An important exception to this approach ofquiet and aloof watchfulness may obtain with theyoungest chess players in kindergarten and firstgrade. Parents of these young chess neophytes caninquire with staff and volunteers if sitting withtheir child might assist the learning process whilethey directly model and explain appropriate attentionand thinking behaviors to their child.Northwest Chess October 2004Parents attending chess club may do well to holdin reserve any advice or remarks they formulate inresponse to watching their child play chess. Such insightsand suggestions can be shared later with thechild in a more reflective milieu conducive to less defensivenesson the part of the child. Chess is a challengingendeavor and requiring a student to 'manage'a parent while playing may simply put too great astrain on a child's mental and emotional resources. Dr.Leois always hoping that students learn to place all oftheir hearts and minds into playing chess (and ultimately.into whatever it is they choose to be doing inthe details of their lives).Dr. Leo thanks all chess parents for supportingtheir chess club. the time they take and the effort theymake to bring their children to weekend chess tournaments.and for the special effort they make to engagetheir children in mental sport. Drop-in parentsare welcome at chess club. Your child will be happyto see you and will feel supported by your calm presence. Please drop by your scholastic club and see themost amazing thing in the world: your child at play..'IIIIICopyright Dr. Leo Stefurak 200421
