Message from the Lehi Fire DepartmentThe winter season presents a specific fire hazard from woodstoves and fireplaces. Unfortunately, many people are unawareof the fire risks when heating homes with wood andsolid fuels.Often these risks are due to creosote buildup, a chemical substancethat forms when wood burns in chimneys and stovepipes. It can be crusty, flaky, tar-like, sticky, shiny, or hardened.Often, all forms will occur in one chimney system.Whatever form it takes, creosote is highly combustible. If itbuilds up in sufficient quantities – and catches fire inside thechimney flue instead of the firebox of the fireplace or woodstove – the result will be a chimney fire.Certain conditions encourage the buildup of creosote. Simplyput, restricted air supply, unseasoned wood and cooler-thannormal chimney temperatures are all factors that can acceleratethe buildup of creosote on chimney flue walls.Air supplies on fireplaces may be restricted by closed glassdoors or by failure to open the damper wide enough to moveheated smoke rapidly up the chimney. The longer thesmoke’s "residence time" in the flue, the more likely is it thatcreosote will form. Burning unseasoned wood keeps the resultingsmoke cooler, as it moves through the system, than ifdried seasoned wood is used. Abnormally cool interior fluetemperatures condense inside a prefabricated chimney causingan accelerated rate of creosote production. All home heating systems require regular maintenance tofunction safely and efficiently. Following these steps will helpprevent a chimney fire from occurring in your home duringthe winter season: Have your chimney or wood stove inspected and cleanedannually by a certified chimney specialist.Clear the area around the hearth of debris, decorationsand flammable materials.Always use a metal mesh screen with fireplaces. Leaveglass doors open while burning a fire.Install stovepipe thermometers to help monitor flue temperatures.Keep air inlets on wood stoves open, and never restrictair supply to fireplaces.Never use flammable liquids to start a fire.Never burn cardboard boxes, trash or debris in your fireplaceor wood stove.Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended. Extinguishthe fire before going to bed or leaving the house.Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. Testthem monthly and change the batteries at least twice ayear.Page 2Fox Hollow Golf SpecialsFox Hollow will be open as long as the snow doesn’t cover thecourse, so put on your warm clothes and come play!
