Lehi City153 N 100 Ewww.lehi-ut.govLehi LedgerMayor’s Message: New Tradition and I’m passing it alongAs the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provideAmericans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods. This year will be different. This year Lehi residents will give the gift of genuine concern for others. There is nolonger an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced byAmerican hands. Yes there is! It's time to think outside the box! Who says a gift needs tofit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from a localLehi hair salon or barber? A Legacy Center membership is appropriate for all ages whoare thinking about some health improvement. Who wouldn't appreciate getting their cardetailed? Small, locally owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a giftcertificate or a book of gift certificates. Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like hisdriveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or around of golf at Fox Hollow. There are many owner-run restaurants -- all offering giftcertificates. This is about supporting our town! How many people couldn't use an oil change for theircar, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the local guy? If you’re thinking about aheartfelt gift for mom, she would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day, ora gift certificate from a local beauty consultant. If you’re looking for something morepersonal, try purchasing local crafts. There are many talented people in Lehi who knitscarves, or make jewelry, pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server anice tip. Also, enjoy a great play at the Lehi Arts theater, or a movie at ThanksgivingPoint.Christmas includes caring about Lehi, and encouraging Lehi small businesses to keepplugging away to follow their dreams. When we care about others, we care about ourcommunities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine.THIS is the new Lehi Christmas tradition– shop and play in Lehi! Enjoy the Holidayswith your families and friends and keep in mind the real spirit of Christmas.Mayor Bert WilsonDecember 2011In This Issue: Mayor’s Message Lehi Info Guide Message from the Lehi FireDepartment Lehi-Rippy Literacy Center Lehi Library Senior Citizens Center Lehi Arts Council Fox Hollow Golf Specials American Legion Post 19 Timpanogos Highway BusinessDeals Hunter Safety Class Legacy Recreation CenterThe City Offices will beClosed on December 26,and January 2, for theHolidays.Purchase yourRound-Up Rodeo ticketsnow online atwww.ezticketlive.com/lehiThe Rodeo will be heldJune 28, 29, & 30.Makes a greatChristmas gift orstocking stuffer!

Message from the Lehi Fire DepartmentThe winter season presents a specific fire hazard from woodstoves and fireplaces. Unfortunately, many people are unawareof the fire risks when heating homes with wood andsolid fuels.Often these risks are due to creosote buildup, a chemical substancethat forms when wood burns in chimneys and stovepipes. It can be crusty, flaky, tar-like, sticky, shiny, or hardened.Often, all forms will occur in one chimney system.Whatever form it takes, creosote is highly combustible. If itbuilds up in sufficient quantities – and catches fire inside thechimney flue instead of the firebox of the fireplace or woodstove – the result will be a chimney fire.Certain conditions encourage the buildup of creosote. Simplyput, restricted air supply, unseasoned wood and cooler-thannormal chimney temperatures are all factors that can acceleratethe buildup of creosote on chimney flue walls.Air supplies on fireplaces may be restricted by closed glassdoors or by failure to open the damper wide enough to moveheated smoke rapidly up the chimney. The longer thesmoke’s "residence time" in the flue, the more likely is it thatcreosote will form. Burning unseasoned wood keeps the resultingsmoke cooler, as it moves through the system, than ifdried seasoned wood is used. Abnormally cool interior fluetemperatures condense inside a prefabricated chimney causingan accelerated rate of creosote production. All home heating systems require regular maintenance tofunction safely and efficiently. Following these steps will helpprevent a chimney fire from occurring in your home duringthe winter season: Have your chimney or wood stove inspected and cleanedannually by a certified chimney specialist.Clear the area around the hearth of debris, decorationsand flammable materials.Always use a metal mesh screen with fireplaces. Leaveglass doors open while burning a fire.Install stovepipe thermometers to help monitor flue temperatures.Keep air inlets on wood stoves open, and never restrictair supply to fireplaces.Never use flammable liquids to start a fire.Never burn cardboard boxes, trash or debris in your fireplaceor wood stove.Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended. Extinguishthe fire before going to bed or leaving the house.Install smoke alarms on every level of your home. Testthem monthly and change the batteries at least twice ayear.Page 2Fox Hollow Golf SpecialsFox Hollow will be open as long as the snow doesn’t cover thecourse, so put on your warm clothes and come play!
