ANNUAL REPORTROYAN I n s t i t u t eof the vas deferens, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, pharmacogenetics, epigenetic and gene expressionprofiles of early embryogenesis. The production of transgenic animals in a joint project with the Embryology Group is another main activity ofthis department. Also, the activities carried out in collaboration with Royan Institute forStem Cell Research are: karyotyping of stem cell lines following variousmanipulations, epigenetic and genetic studies of stem cells and iPS cells,in addition to other common research interests with that institute.Goals of the department• To improve implantation rates and health ofembryos by preimplantation genetic screeningand diagnosis• To assist physicians with prescribingmedicine for controlled ovarian stimulationvia pharmacogenetics• Genetic follow up of newborns conceivedby ART• Evaluation of candidate genes related torecurrent abortion in the Iranian population• Epigenetic studies of oocytes, sperm and embryosThe mission of the Genetics Department is basic research on genetic and epigenetic factors that may impactfertility, embryo development and implantation, bringing these research results to the clinical setting with thepurpose of improving the health of patients and newborns, and also producing pharmaceutical proteins throughtransgenic animals. Its vision is to use genetic science to understand the reasons for infertility, to discover better treatments, and toensure the health of patients and newborns following ART.Overview of the department in 2009The department was working on 11 research projects, and collaborating on 20 projects from other departments.12 MSc and two PhD thesis were started and 5 students finished their thesis. Nine oral and 23 posters presentedin national and international congresses. The list of department’s published papers will come below. Also twohands on workshops were held during last year.In the clinical part, more than 1800 genetic consultation, 2000 Karyotypes, 850 AZF deletions, 250 PGD testshave been performed.60The main activities and researches of the department• Genetic causes of male and female infertility• Recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA)• Genetic factors leading to azoospermia• Mutations leading to congenital agenesis of the vasdeferens• Preimplantation genetic diagnosis• Pharmacogenetics• Epigenetic and gene expression profiles of earlyembryogenesis• Genetic engineering and manipulations of mammalian cellsfor use in farm animal cloning to produce transgenic animals
