YEAR-END reviewHEALTH NEWSTop 10 in 2011byANTHONY R. RODA, MaHeSoSHEALTHbeat StaffIt’s a tradition. It’s an obligation. HEALTHbeat brings you once again the Top 10 health stories that rocked the Department ofHealth in 2011, based on media monitoring of health news coupled with the opinions of the editorial staff. If the news is a reflectionof the state of health of the nation, then we are quite in trouble because it starts off in blood and ends up in a circus. Let’s do thecountdown...10 Voluntary Blood Donation“More blood, more life.” This wasthe global theme for World Blood Day onJune 14. This was also the theme adopted bythe Department of Health when it observedthe National Voluntary Blood DonationMonth in July. A few heeded the call inblood letting activities, mostly from comingfrom the health sector and some from thepolice and the military. Others were alreadyregular donors and for a few newbies they, shall we say, “forced volunteers.” The act ofvoluntarily donating blood has not exactlycreeped in the consciousness of Filipinos. Many would only think of donating bloodwhen a member of the family or a closefriend is the one in need. One thing good that happenedduring the surge of dengue cases in Luzonwas the hype media created on the need ofblood for dengue patients, mostly children. And for the first time, news on voluntaryblood donation reached Healthbeat’scountdown of the Top 10 health news.On August 15, Philippine RedCross (PRC) Secretary General GwendolynPang urged more people to donate blood assevere dengue cases need blood.Data provided by PRC show thatOIC Undersecretary Gerardo Bayugo (right) shakes the hand of Enchong Dee (left) - matinee idol, swimmer, regular blood donor and instant DOH voluntary blood donation program poster boy.
