As anFIC student, you will have access to these services as well as the student services offered by SFU.Study and learning supportAt FIC, we understand that the transitionto university-level study can bedifficult. To assist you in developing thestudy skills necessary to successfullycomplete your program of study, FICoffers a variety of different studyand learning support services.Our Student Advisors, in conjunctionwith SFU and various teaching staff,run a number of support tutorials andworkshops throughout each term forstudents to develop their study skillsin areas such as time management,essay writing, course planning andexamination techniques. Certified peertutors are also available to assist you inall courses offered at FIC. If you needassistance with assignment drafting,researching, and referencing we canhelp. International students who needextra help with their spoken and writtenEnglish skills will also find the freeEnglish support tutorials offered eachterm very helpful. We encourage youto participate fully in these programsand to contact the friendly staff at FICfor advice and assistance as soon asyou are finding things a little difficult.Personal supportA free and confidential advising serviceis available to all FIC students. Thingsoften do not go the way we plannedor sometimes problems of a personalnature arise. An advisor is available tomeet with you to discuss any problemsor concerns you may have while youare at FIC. If anything is preventing youfrom enjoying your academic, socialor personal life, then seeing the FICAdvisor is often a very good start inresolving these issues. FIC studentsalso have access to the excellent healthand counselling services of SFU.Integrated Learning SkillsThe Integrated Learning Skills Course isdesigned to provide students with thelearning skills required to be successful inuniversity studies in a Canadian learningenvironment. The course offers studentsa broad introduction to the skills involvedin acquiring information and in conveyingknowledge to others. This course isrequired for all UTP Stage II students toensure a smooth transition to a Canadianteaching/learning environment.Orientation*Orientation is a series of activities andprograms at the start of the term whichprovides you with valuable informationand assistance to help you make asmooth transition to study at FIC.What happens at Orientation?• Welcome to Canada andFIC/SFU Community.• Be introduced to FIC/SFUservices and facilities.• Obtain program information.• Obtain student ID card.• Obtain information aboutyour Medical insurance.• Be introduced to FIC servicesand facilities.• Tour the SFU campus.• Meet new friends and FIC staff.• Students registered for SFUon-campus accommodationare automatically registered fordormitory orientation and areencouraged to participate fully.* Please note: Attendance at Orientation is compulsory for all new students.21
