English language requirementsThe language of instruction at FIC is English. Before being granted admission into an FIC program,you must demonstrate a suitable level of English proficiency. Your English language preparationIf you do not meet the minimum English language requirements forentry to your program at FIC, you may want to enrol in an intensiveEnglish language course at SFU. The Preparation in AcademicSkills (PAS) and English Language & Culture (ELC) programs willassist you in improving your English language proficiency prior tostarting at FIC.Preparation in AcademicSkills (PAS)Preparation in Academic Skills (PAS)in English is a SFU program whichprovides English language training foruniversitybound international studentswho have achieved an IELTS score of4.5 (no band less than 4.0) or equivalent.PAS English classes are held on the Burnabycampus of SFU, so students can enjoythe experience of studying English inone of Canada’s top universities, withfull access to SFU facilities and FIC.Off-campus ESL collegesFIC staff can offer advice regarding otherspecialist ESL colleges in Vancouver forstudents without an English test score,or with an IELTS of less than 4.5 atthe time of applying to FIC. These ESLcolleges allow students to improve theirEnglish language skills through intensiveEnglish programs. Most specialist ESLcolleges have monthly intake dates.SFU English Language &Culture Program (ELC)The English Language andCulture Program is an intenselyinteractive learning experiencein a university setting.The ELC program emphasizes theimportance of improving English skillsand understanding the culture in whicha language is used. Students will beable to continue to learn independentlyoutside of the classroom, and gain theconfidence to use English in any setting.The SFU ELC program offers a widerange of English Language courses, frombeginners to advanced and is located onthe SFU Vancouver campus. Programscan be taken over 4, 8 or 12 weekperiods depending upon your Englishlanguage needs.
