NETWORK TO THE MAX
IN THE 40 YEARS SINCE IT WAS CREATED,
FAYMONVILLE HAS SUCCEEDED IN
SECURING THE WIDESPREAD APPLICATION
OF ITS CONCEPTS IN BELGIUM AND
EUROPE. IN ORDER TO GUARANTEE AND
REINFORCE ITS POSITION IN EUROPE, THE
MANUFACTURER FROM BÜLLINGEN HAS
DEVELOPED A NETWORK OF
REPRESENTATIVES WHO COVER THE
MARKET.
HALF A CENTURY OF HISTORY
The Faymonville story starts with the manufacture
of vehicles in a forge at Rocherath.
Subsequent developments can be traced with
the aid of a few key dates:
Up until the beginning of the 1960s :
sale of agricultural machinery and tractor
cabins
1962 : Berthold Faymonville builds a new
production unit
Up until the mid-1960s : Faymonville
manufactures and sells forestry vehicles
End of the 1960s : the first semitrailer is
built at Rocherath
The production range is extended,
with the addition of:
the first lowbed semitrailer for the transport of
glass in 1973,
the first inloader for the transport of glass in
1977,
the first extendable hydraulic steered semitrailer
in 1980.
A European
leader
From 1980, FAYMONVILLE becomes the
specialist in special transport.
The years go by and expansion proves necessary.
In 1988, the firm moves into its new
production unit, in the industrial estate of Büllingen.
In 1990, the repair department is created
in order to improve the services provided to
the customers.
Still in 1990, Alain Faymonville, son of Berthold
Faymonville, takes over the management
of the company.
In 1997 a new business line is launched:
the purchase and resale of second-hand
vehicles. In the same year, the production
unit is extended by a third.
At the beginning of 1999, this production
unit is enlarged again, resulting in its surface
area being extended from 6,000 m 2 to
10,000 m 2 .
Target for 2000-2001 : reach a turnover
of 40 million euro
With 150 employees and a turnover of 33.2 million
euro (up 30% on the previous year)… Faymonville
is currently one of the leading European manufacturers
of towed vehicles intended for special transport
purposes.
With a range extending from 20 to 250 tonnes
(thanks to its brand new product Modulmax), Faymonville
is capable of meeting all requirements in
the field of special transport.
The Belgian company has experienced substantial
growth over the last three years, and this has prompted
it to increase its production capacity. The firm
has purchased a new 3-ha site in Büllingen,
increased the production hall surface area from
6,000 to 10,000 m 2 , and extended its service
centre from 1,500 to 3,500 m 2 . It is also building
a new plant in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg
(see article on page 8 in this issue).
Already well represented at commercial level throughout
Western Europe, Faymonville is currently
developing in the South and in Eastern Europe.
PRODUCT TO THE MAX
A super exceptiona
FOR THE TRANSPORT OF
CONSTRUCTION PLANT,
VARIOMAX HAS ASSERTED ITS
LEADERSHIP AS THE BEST
COMPROMISE BETWEEN LEGAL
OBLIGATIONS, TECHNICAL
IMPERATIVES AND ECONOMIC
NECESSITY.
AN INTRODUCTION TO THIS
MODULAR-DESIGN VEHICLE,
WHOSE QUALITIES ARE EARNING
IT MORE AND MORE NEW
USERS.
By establishing maximum axle weights, changing
legislation has made the Variomax a necessity
for specialised hauliers and engineering
companies required to haul plant weighting over
50 tonnes.
Developed by Faymonville, this vehicle can handle
machinery of 30 to 100 tonnes. Its distinctive
feature is its modular conception. It is made
up of a gooseneck, removable pendular twinaxle
dolly, a loading platform and a modul with
three, four or five sets of knuckled steered axles.
The Variomax has hydraulic suspension. When
the dolly is removed, the loading platform is
directly connected to the gooseneck. This operation
can be completed within 15 minutes by an
experienced handler.
2 + 4 = bingo !
The Variomax is built entirely out of highly elastic
steel. The result is a very interesting tareweight
from 26 to 35 tonnes depending on the
loading platform, and the number of axles
behind which is always adapted to customers'
needs.
The 2+4 configuration is the most widely used.
With an 8x4 tractor, it offers a payload of 76
tonnes at normal speed and 94 tonnes at low
speed in Belgium. In Germany, with twin axles,
it makes it possible to reach 12 tonnes per axle
and transport 71 tonnes legally. A tonnage
higher than what the competition offers in a 2+5
version!
"With the Variomax, the customer has one less
axle to buy and maintain and a vehicle measuring
around 1.5 meters shorter", explains
Arnold Luxen, Faymonville's Sales Manager. "It
therefore qualifies for certain derogations and
also offers easier handling. Not to forget the
340 mm stroke of the twin axle version (as
opposed to 280 to 300 mm for our competitors),
the low tareweight and attractive price
compared to pendle axles capable of bearing
such heavy loads are two more factors to add
at the advantages of this system. The independent
suspension gives a better stability and contribute
to the longevity of the trailer"
Another strength of the Variomax is the coupling
system between the loading platform and the
rear axles, which is standard equipment. The system
allows interchangeable platforms and
deflexion of the combination according to the
payload. Its standard equipment also includes
285/70 R19.5 tyres, bigger than what is normally
found on low-loaders vehicles and consequently
longer wearing. Wear and tear on
brakes is also slowed through the use of 19.5"
drums, guaranteeing optimal efficiency. The
Variomax is unbeatable!

It's a long time since managers took their own
car to provide breakdown service to the firm's
customers all over Europe! Today, the manufacturer
still provides this service itself, but in a
clearly structured and organised way.
"Little by little, we have invested in breakdown
equipment worthy of the name", explains Viktor
Palm, Technical and After-Sales Manager.
"Our latest acquisition is a Ford 7.3 l pick-up
that pulls a fully equipped two-axle trailer. The
gooseneck section is fitted with a berth and a
small bathroom with shower, toilet and sink for
the mechanic. The trailer body is a genuine
Super Mario
This out-of-the-ordinary vehicle criss-crosses
Europe regularly, from Poland to Spain. On
board is Mario Pfeiffer, an unparalleled
mechanic. Starting his career at Faymonville at
age 18, Mario has done every job in the workshop,
This service is available 24 hours a
day. The monthly average is five to eight
breakdown calls. There used to be more, but
the development of synergy with certain dealers
for minor repairs has made it possible to
cut down on the number of trips made by the
PRODUCTION TO THE MAX
A key element
of production
LASER CUTTING PLAYS A
DECISIVE ROLE IN THE
MANUFACTURE OF
FAYMONVILLE SEMI-TRAILERS.
THE EFFICIENCY OF EVERY LINK
OF THE PRODUCTION CHAIN
DEPENDS ON THE EFFICIENCY OF
THE LASER CUTTING.
Laser cutting is fast, flexible and
precise to one tenth
of a millimetre.
Faymonville semi-trailers are manufactured
according to a well structured production
method. The vehicles are put together gradually.
To supply this chain, Faymonville manufactures
most of the parts that have to be bent
or welded at its own factory. Steel sheets of
different thickness are the raw material for production.
The thickest (20 to 180 mm) are used
for the chassis and are cut using flame-cutting
and plasma. The finest (1 to 20 mm) serve as
a base for all the elements surrounding the
chassis. They are cut by a remarkably
efficient laser cutting machine that operates
24 hours a day, 6 days a week.
Thomas Cypers
LASER CUTTING
In four years, it has already put in 22,000
hours of work.
Just-in-time method
"Speed, flexibility and precision to one tenth of
a millimetre are the main advantages of the
laser technique", explains Thomas Cypers, responsible
for the cutting process at Faymonville.
The machine can cut parts for nine different
trailers simultaneously, with each trailer being
divided into several parts. In spite of this diversity,
the programmes we use to command the
laser enable us to cut parts so that they reach
the right point in the production line precisely
at the moment they have to be placed into the
vehicle."
And this is the key to success. This precise
delivery is possible using the just-in-time method.
This principle operates at Faymonville's plant on
the basis of a sign system. When the production
line workers are ready to start a new trailer,
they post a sign at a given spot. When
he sees the sign, the worker operating the laser
machine knows he can proceed with another
cut. Though quite simple in appearance, the
system is harder to put into practice than it
looks…
Next April, Faymonville will be buying a second
laser cutting machine so as to be in a position
to handle the increase in production the company
is facing, under the best possible conditions.
The two machines will be operated in
two shifts, offering more flexibility for this key
function in the company.
