BISHOP INDIAN HEAD STARTWelcome Head Start families to <strong>Bishop</strong> Indian HeadStart (BIHS). We are looking forward to working with youand your children and having a wonderful successful schoolyear. We would like to introduce you to the BIHS staff. InClassroom 1 is Teacher Vanessa Bigham and Teacher’s AideDayle Dondero. In Classroom 2 we have Teacher Mary LouEnriquez and Teacher’s Aide Lena Dondero. In classroom 3we have Teacher Ralph Cataldo and Co Teacher StephanieMarcuda and in Classroom 4 Annette Dondero andTeacher’s Aide Paula Manriquez. Our cooking staff includesHead Cook Angela Torres and her assistant Diane Nelson.<strong>The</strong> bus drivers are Gwen Turner and Susie Cisneros, HeadStart Director. Your Family Advocate is Donna Thomas andthe BIHS Health/Disabilities Manager is Amanda (Mandy)Miloradich. <strong>The</strong> BIHS Janitor is Quina West, Junior.Children’s Health Exam: <strong>The</strong> Head Start Policythat all children enrolled in the Head Start program must havea health exam. <strong>The</strong> Head Start policy states that the healthexam be completed by Tuesday, September, 24 for the 30 dayState Preschool deadline. If the required Health Exam is notturned in to us by those deadlines, your child’s enrollmentin Head Start may be jeopardized. If you need assistance inlocating a medical home for you child; please let us know andwe can help you locate one.Illness Policy: If your child has a fever of 101 orgreater he or she will need stay home for 24 hours until theyare free without the use of a fever reducer. If your child hasthese symptoms; heavy diarrhea, vomiting, green mucus, sorethroat, cough or rash then they could be ill and will need to beexcluded for 24 hours. Your child may need medical treatmentif their illness worsens or continues. For the health and safetyof everyone, you may be asked to provide Head Start witha doctor’s note that states that a physician has cleared yourchild to return to school safely and that he or she is noncontagious.Positive Indian Parenting classes: Will start onMonday, September 23 and the second class is Monday, October 21from 12:00-1:00. <strong>The</strong> classes will be held in the Head Start/CommunityCenter and will take place each month at Head Start. Digital Literacycomputer classes are held every Tuesday, from 11:00-1:00 in theHead Start /Community Center. Lunch is being provided to those whoattend the Digital Literacy Class.In the Classroom: <strong>The</strong> month of September is learning aboutpedestrian and transportation safety. Your child will also be learningabout playground safety. <strong>The</strong> color for the month is red and the shapefor the month is a circle. <strong>The</strong> health focus is tooth brushing and handwashing. We will be going to Toiyabe Dental for your child’s dentalscreening. <strong>The</strong> classroom dates and times are listed on the monthlycalendar. Parents may meet us down at Toiyabe Dental 52 Tu SuLane for their child’s dental screening. NATIVE AMERICAN HOUSING STUDY<strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Paiute</strong>An important study about housing needs and conditions will takeplace in our community. <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Paiute</strong> is one of 40 tribes that wereselected to take part in a national survey about the housing needs ofAmerican Indian and Alaska Native families. <strong>The</strong> study is sponsoredby the Department of Housing and Urban Development. <strong>The</strong> studywill provide information about housing needs of our people. Thisinformation will be used to inform policy makers and tribes about howto improve housing conditions. <strong>The</strong> study has received tribal approvaland is scheduled to begin the week of September 16th. NORC at theUniversity of Chicago, a non-profit research organization, has hiredtribal members to conduct the survey. About 65 households on <strong>Bishop</strong><strong>Paiute</strong> have been randomly selected to take part. Each selectedhousehold will soon receive a letter in the mail about the survey.<strong>The</strong> interviewers will show identification when calling on the selectedhouseholds. Participation is voluntary. All information is confidential.If asked, it is hoped that you will take part in this important project toimprove housing for native families in Indian Country.CIVIL STANDBY PROCEDURES<strong>The</strong> <strong>Bishop</strong> Tribal Police Department recognizes that individuals may, at times, need ourassistance with obtaining property or belongings. For your knowledge and convenience,prior to requesting our assistance, please review our policy.1.2.3.4.5.6.7.TRIBAL POLICE OFFICERS ARE PROHIBITED FROM ANY PHYSICAL ASSISTANCE IN REMOVINGANY PROPERTY. OFFICERS AREN’T ALLOWED TO STRAY FROM THIS POLICY. THIS PROTECTS THEOFFICER, TRIBAL POLICE AND BISHOP PAIUTE TRIBE OF ANY LIABILITY.A Civil Standby must be arranged and conducted during regular business hours Monday through Friday 8am-5pm.Due to other obligations Officers are not permitted to stay longer than 30 minutes. Please ensure you haveplenty of assistance from family or friends at the time of the Civil Standby to avoid delays.Only under EMERGENCY circumstances is a Civil Standby permitted outside of regular business hours and is atthe discretion/availability of the Officer.If a more urgent call is received by an Officer, while at the Civil Standby, the Officer is required to leave andattend to the call. Once the call is completed the Officer may make contact to ensure nothing further is needed.At anytime the Officer feels the situation escalates to a level that it no longer becomes feasible to continue, he/she may terminate the Civil Standby.A Civil Standby may be arranged by calling the Tribal Police Office at 760-873-4477. Women’s Legal AdvocacyProgramDomestic Violence Awareness MonthOtober is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, an annualeffort to bring awareness of and prevention of DomesticViolence; and to re<strong>new</strong> commitment to end violence in ourhomes, our families and our communities. <strong>The</strong> Women’s LegalAdvocacy Program (WLAP) will be promoting the observancewith a series of events throughout the month. Working with theOVCDC Tribal TANF and the <strong>Bishop</strong> <strong>Paiute</strong> <strong>Tribe</strong> ROSS Programour main event will be the Resource Fair to be held Saturday,October 12, <strong>2013</strong> from 10AM to 1PM at the Barlow Lane Gymgrounds. <strong>The</strong>re will be food, activities and information.During the month the WLAP will be distributing purple ribbonsto wear and with which to decorate; sponsoring an officedecorating competition called “Paint the Rez Purple” (no notliterally); and distributing and displaying Domestic ViolencePrevention information. Rebecca comes from Michigan and brings a wealth ofexperience. Rebecca has been working with the Saginaw ChippewaIndian <strong>Tribe</strong> in their Prosecutor’s Office as a Victim Advocate for 5 yearsand has 10 years of advocacy experience. Her degree is in psychologyfrom Central Michigan University and she has a Masters in forensicpsychology from the Chicago School of Forensic Psychology.
