More than 320 breeding linesdeveloped at IRRI have been released as varieties by national rice improvement programsthroughout the world. Numerous other lines have been used in the hybridizationprograms. IRRI developed breeding materials and their progenies are now planted to60% of the world rice land. One of the IRRI varieties, IR36, was planted to I 1 millionhectares of rice land in 1980s. No other variety of rice or any other food crop has beenplanted that widely before. World rice production more than doubled from 257 milliontons in 1966 to 600 million tons in 2000. Increased production from these varieties feeds1 billion more rice consumers annually.cvgsk:April 2002
