In close proximity are various process<strong>in</strong>dustry facilities as shown <strong>in</strong> Fig. 3.12, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g biochemicals, biofuels such as biomass,bioethanol, biodiesel and biogas, packag<strong>in</strong>g, pharmaceuticals, substitute cotton,sugar, food, nutritional <strong>in</strong>gredients and construction materials. These act as raw materialfeedstocks to other <strong>in</strong>dustries, the range of which is broad and <strong>in</strong>cludes pa<strong>in</strong>t, manufacturedby cluster-member Akzo Nobel, substitute cotton, <strong>for</strong> which <strong>in</strong>teractions areevolv<strong>in</strong>g through Västra Götaland‟s „Smart Textiles‟ cluster at Boräs near Gothenburgwith Hennes & Mauritz (H&M) cloth<strong>in</strong>g retail company. The reason <strong>for</strong> this <strong>in</strong>novativetranslation of specialist cellulose „com<strong>for</strong>t fibre‟ <strong>in</strong>to cotton textiles is that an era of„peak cotton‟ is predicted <strong>in</strong> the textile <strong>in</strong>dustry because of the unsusta<strong>in</strong>able productionmethods and steeply ris<strong>in</strong>g price of cotton on the world market. Sugar from <strong>for</strong>est productsis currently mixed with imported sugar cane to produce bioethanol, someth<strong>in</strong>g thatshould contribute to reductions <strong>in</strong> sugar cane imports but which can flexibly be redirectedto other uses. Biomedical applications of <strong>for</strong>est products <strong>in</strong>clude tissues andcloths used <strong>in</strong> surgery, bio „scaffolds‟ that support body parts temporarily be<strong>for</strong>e dissolv<strong>in</strong>g,and, aga<strong>in</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g with Smart Textiles, woven blood vessel replacements.62
